Ben Affleck, who has since moved on with former flame Jennifer Lopez, revealed in an interview on The Howard Stern Show that his drinking habits would have continued had he still been married to the mother of his three children.

He likewise insisted on feeling “trapped” in his 13-year relationship with his ex-wife, subsequently leading the Oscar winner to spiral out of control.

I’d probably still be drinking. It’s part of why I started drinking

The ex-couple were married from 2005 to 2018 and share three children: Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and nine-year-old Samuel.

“I’d probably still be drinking. It’s part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped,” Ben told the radio host.

“I was like ‘I can’t leave ’cause of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’ What I did was drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”

The interview certainly left people talking on social media, with many fans flocking to Twitter to share their thoughts on the Argo filmmaker pushing blame on Jennifer as the reason he struggled with his alcoholism.

One Twitter user slammed Ben, asserting that it was his ex-wife who decided to throw him out after having supported his many trips to rehab, yet he still couldn’t pull himself together.

“The marriage didn’t work because he was drinking and didn’t care – and he didn’t leave the marriage, she threw him out. If he stopped drinking after that he should be thanking her for saving his life, by getting rid of the toxic in their marriage and family,” said @ynkefn.

@megsmi2 continued the conversation, asking who was responsible for the Gone Girl actor’s drinking problem when he went to rehab in 2001 — long before he would meet the mother of his kids.

@mimisnowball responded to the tweet, adding: “Or 2017, 2018, 2019 when they already had split? He had all of his failed rehab attempts either before their marriage or after it.”

Another concerned fan @Maitryn said: “How do you self-destruct your career and reputation in one interview?  Let Jenny from the block give you advice. Can’t believe he’s blaming Jennifer Garner for this.”

In his latest interview, Ben’s way of words had left many people puzzled, especially since it was just last year when he claimed that pulling through with his divorce from Jennifer was “the biggest regret” of his life.

Ben took part in a candid chat with The New York Times last February, revealing that his alcoholism had taken an adverse effect on the couple’s relationship. His alcohol consumption increased rapidly when cracks began to appear in the marriage.

He expressed: “I have certainly done things that I regret. But you’ve got to pick yourself up, learn from it, learn some more, try to move forward.”

In 2015, it was alleged that the Live By Night director shared a sexual relationship with the family’s nanny Christine Ouzounian, who was initially hired to care for the couple’s children.

Jennifer later appeared to confirm that Ben did have a fling with Christine, though she remained adamant that the incident occurred while the pair had already separated.

“Let me just tell you something. We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to with our decision to divorce,” she told Vanity Fair in February 2016.

“She was not a part of the equation.”

“Bad judgement? Yes. It’s not great for your kids for [a nanny] to disappear from their lives. I have had to have conversations [with my children] about the meaning of scandal.”

Elsewhere, Ben has since rekindled his romance with pop star Jennifer Lopez, whom he first began dating in 2002, followed by their engagement news the following year.

While the pair decided to postpone their 2003 wedding, it was Ben who eventually decided to pull the plug and call off the engagement in early 2004.

Jennifer and Ben reunited earlier this year and have been inseparable ever since, with sources claiming they’ve been looking to purchase their first home together.
