Strictly: Bill Bailey reveals he 'almost set fire to the studio'
Bill Bailey, 55, was crowned the winner of the 2020 series of Strictly Come Dancing alongside his dance partner Oti Mabuse last weekend. However, the comedian has today divulged that not all went to plan during the show’s grand finale, as he “kicked over” one of the pyrotechnic boxes in the group number.
We can’t be left alone for a second
Speaking out on the close call, Bill explained: “There was a pre-recorded section where we did a walk down at the beginning of the show.
“Jamie [Laing] and I were on one side and Maisie [Smith] and HRVY were on the other, and we had a count in and then we had to walk down.”
Bill shared that he and fellow finalist Jamie both missed the count, so a stage manager had offered to count them in.
“Jamie and I were like, ‘Yes, yes, we’re fine, between the two of us we can count to eight.’

“And just as I said that I kicked over one of the pyrotechnic boxes, tripped over that and nearly fell down the stairs.
“We can’t be left alone for a second,” he added.
Bill imagined what the headlines might have been if his appearance had ended in further disaster.
He continued on Lorraine this morning: “That would have been a great way to start the show, ‘Bill Bailey has ignited his own trousers’.”
Bill also spoke about his final performance song The Show Must Go On, which he described as a “rally call” for the nation as many older people including his dad have been in isolation since March.
“It also made me think of my dad,” he said.
“As we heard during the day about the new restrictions and about the fact that my dad has been on his own isolating since March.
“We were looking forward to seeing him at Christmas, and then we thought, ‘Oh no, we can’t do that now’, and he is going to be on his own.

“So there was a lot of that going on as well.
“It almost made me want to give more in the performance, in a way.”
He also said winning the show would have been his late mother’s proudest ever moment, as she loved ballroom dancing.
After he stormed to victory last Saturday, Bill shared a heartfelt speech thanking fans.
On Twitter, Bill said in an emotional video: “I can’t put into words what this means to us both, to everyone who voted, who supported us, any message of support we have received. Thank you.
“It means the world to us both.”
Oti added: “And thank you to everyone who supported this show. It means the world to us. The show is everything. It gave us hope.
“You guys watching and supporting everyone means a lot.”
