Virgin Radio host Chris Evans, 54, and Loose Women’s Carol McGiffin, 60, tied the knot in 1991 but admitted on Friday’s show that she “always knew” their marriage would never last. They were married for seven years until they split in 1998.
I knew when I married my first husband that it wasn’t going to be forever
She admitted feeling like there was something “not quite right” about their relationship from the beginning.
Her admission was sparked after the Loose Women panel watched a clip fo the show from 2003 where Carol discussed the option of divorce and if it wasn’t an option, she would never have made the marriage commitment.
In the clip, she could be heard saying: “If at the time I was getting married I had known that there was no way I could have got divorced and I wasn’t allowed to, I would absolutely never have got married, I wouldn’t have done it.”
But she insisted the statement doesn’t apply to her current husband Mark Cassidy, who she married in Thailand in 2018.
“It’s totally different this time,” she said.
“I can’t believe I said that out loud back then, but I knew when I married my first husband that it wasn’t going to be forever, I knew that,” Carol admitted, referring to Chris.
“I knew it wasn’t quite right, so I just went along with it, weirdly, knowing I could get out of it, which is completely wrong.”
She recalled doing “everything” to try to “keep it together” but in the end couldn’t stop their relationship fizzling out.
“But luckily it was allowed, but no I would still have married Mark 100%, because you just know.”
Chris and Carol first met when she was working as a producer for Music Box in 1988 and Chris was doing a report on the network for his radio show in Manchester.
She remembered first setting eyes on him in her autobiography Oh, Carol!: “He came into the office, all legs and bright orange hair – but it was the oh-so-confident swagger that got my attention,” she wrote.
She told of how their relationship transpired from a sneaky kiss on a press trip when Chris was working for BBC to sealing the deal after a boozy night out in London.

Recalling that evening, she wrote: “Chris made me laugh until I literally couldn’t get my breath. We were quite drunk and, later when Chris and I went back to his house, we had sex for the first time.
“After that we became embroiled in a relationship of sorts. I was 30, he was 24. We did almost everything together and laughed so much.”
But things seemed to go down hill from there and looking back, she told the Loose Women panel in 2019 that she didn’t even know why she married him.
“I was just swept along, at the time I convinced myself I couldn’t live without him,” she told her fellow presenters.
“Anyone who thinks I married him for his money, that’s nonsense because I had more money than him at the time.
“He was nothing without me, nothing. I’m glad it all went a bit wrong. I persevered with it and I was determined to make it work.
Chris went on to marry popstar and actress Billie Piper, but the two later divorced in 2007 and remain on good terms.
He is now happily married to Natasha Shishmanian and share four children together.
Loose Women airs weekdays on ITV at 12:30pm.
