BBC Breakfast: Dan Walker punches studio light in dance blunder
BBC Breakfast favourite Dan Walker, 43, has revealed he once halted legendary footballer Pelé from signing his kit bag because he was worried it would “ruin it”. During an appearance on Would I Lie To You? on Monday evening, the BBC star announced the shock confession to a surprised Rob Brydon, David Mitchell and Lee Mack who were bowled over by the admission.
I told Pelé to put his pen down because I thought he was ruining it
Dan appeared alongside fellow contestants Sara Pascoe, Nicola Coughlan and Mr Motivator, and during his turn in the Home Truths round of the show, which sees panelists read out a statement about themselves leaving the opposing team to decide whether it’s true or false, he left them all stumped.
He recalled the Brazilian sports star was halfway through writing his autograph when he asked him to stop.
Introducing his true or false statement, Dan produced a green sport bag and read out: “This is my sports bag and half way through signing it, I told Pele to put his pen down because I thought he was ruining it,” he said.
“The reason I didn’t want him to sign it was because I wanted to use it in the gym.”

The audience gasped while the panel seemed a little confused, as he pointed out only half of his signature was visible on the side of the kit.
After examining the freshly sanitised bag, Lee questioned: “If he started it, is it not better to finish it than to just have ‘Pe’?”
The studio howled with laughter as Dan explained: “I had taken a Brazil shirt with me, so I gave it to the great man and he signed the shirt – full signature on the shirt.
“I took the shirt and turned to put it on my normal bag that I brought with me and then when I turned back, the great man had the bag he’d picked up and without thinking, I said, ‘Not the bag, Pele!’”
When asked how he reacted to the exclamation, the 43-year-old blushed as he admitted the footballer seemed “angry”.
“He sort of stared at me angrily and then he said, ‘No one has ever asked me not to sign anything before,'” Dan winced.
But Rob wasn’t convinced: “Dan, I don’t understand why you didn’t want Pelé to sign a bag! Why?”
The BBC star replied: “Because I really liked the bag!”

The quiz show host seemed in disbelief, suggesting he could have sold it years down the line when it would be worth a fortune.
While Lee and his team were adamant that the story was a lie, Dan shocked everyone when he revealed the truth.
The panel were left with their mouths wide open when Dan announced the story to be true, with viewers watching at home branding him “mental” for turning down a world-class autograph.
