Eamonn Holmes has apologised for comparing his This Morning colleague Dr Zoe Williams’ hair to alpaca fur.

During Thursday’s edition of the ITV daytime programme, the Irish presenter – co-hosting with his wife Ruth Langsford – delivered a poorly-timed joke.

When Dr Zoe arrived to discuss the latest health news, she mentioned there was a segment about “how your health can be benefited from gardening and even alpacas”.

Instantly perking up to share a joke with the TV doctor, Eamonn remarked: “Your hair reminds me of an alpaca today.

“You just want to pet it, don’t you? It’s very alpaca-ish.”

Unfortunately viewers weren’t impressed, and Eamonn was quick to apologise for the blunder.

“Hey everyone out there,” he shared on his Twitter page. “If my attempt at being humorous with my friend @DrZoeWilliams was misjudged I am mortified and humbly apologise to anyone who was offended.”

Dr Zoe laughed in response at first before pointing her pen at the screen to tell Eamonn off for his comments.

“Don’t touch my hair,” she declared firmly, while still smiling at the presenter.

“Don’t touch the hair,” Ruth repeated as she thanked Zoe for her assistance in the segment.

While all three of the TV stars laughed during the on-air chat, viewers immediately complained over Eamonn’s word choice – and the fact he’d likened a black woman’s hair to an animal with fuzzy fur.

“Did that really just come out of Eamonn’s mouth?” one person tweeted in shock, as another said: “Uh Eamonn what tf was that about? Have u learnt nothing?! U never talk about petting a black woman’s hair. And saying it looks like an Alpaca?!”

And in response to the This Morning host’s apology, another viewer said sincerely: “Making jokes about a black woman’s hair is never being ‘humorous’ especially when comparing it to an animal.

“Eamonn I appreciate you felt this was in good humour, but please do better.”

“The interesting bit is that she feels obliged to laugh along out of politeness,” one person then commented. “All black people are familiar with this.

“If she makes a scene, she loses the gig or is seen as humourless. ‘It was only a joke.’ Every day as a black person is a negotiation and it’s exhausting.”

It comes as Eamonn took a swipe at being forced to present only in holiday slots on the show now.

This Morning continues weekdays at 10am on ITV.
