Kate Hudson is another of InStyle’s former cover women talking about their careers and life in honor of the magazine’s 25th anniversary. She didn’t say anything revelatory but I heard it in her voice. She has a real zest for life that comes through in everything she does. Plus she works hard on her physique, she admits to that, and she loves to show it off. She talked about her 2001 cover, when she posed strategically nude (here’s a link to that, she’s so photoshopped she looks like a Barbie) and admitted that it doesn’t take much to get her to do that. At least she’s honest. She also talked work life balance, being a mom and being 40. You can read the full interview here, and here are some highlights.
She loves being naked and wearing bikinis
To be honest, it doesn’t take a lot for me to take my clothes off. People can say whatever they want, but I like being naked. Always have! In 2001, when I was 22, I was on the cover of InStyle for the second time. I was newly married [to musician Chris Robinson], and my whole career had just shot up after Almost Famous came out. I posed naked for the cover, and I was strategically draped with what was basically chain mail. The stylist had a very hard job. [laughs]
On work life balance
I’ve always put my heart into everything I’ve done in my career, but I believe that there have to be other things that fulfill you in life besides your job. My agent once said to me, “I think I care more about you not getting a part than you do.” I said, “You do, which is why you’re my agent.” The idea that I won’t be happy unless I achieve absolute success doesn’t exist for me; I put that energy into my family and relationships. Because when you get rid of all the bells and whistles, they’re all that matters.
On turning 40
I turned 40 earlier this year, and people kept asking how I felt. But I really wasn’t thinking about it at all. It’s just an age, and I think it’s a great age. You’re at a phase in your life where you’ve actually earned some wisdom. It’s kind of nice to have some years under your belt. And you know what? I’m even more fun now than I was back then, damn it.
I’ve mentioned this before, so forgive me if you’ve heard it already, but I used to have a bikini photo of Kate Hudson on my computer which I would look at occasionally as motivation. (I need to find the photos of that house in the LA hills I coveted too.) I like that she’s so upfront about how much work she puts into fitness and diet, and also that she admits she’s proud of the results. Not many celebrities are honest like that. Also, I agree with her about getting older. I feel like I’m finally the person I was meant to be and am more content with both my age and with being myself.
