Meghan Markle "can't risk" rekindling her relationship with her estranged father Thomas Markle, a royal expert has claimed.
Royal biographer Andrew Morton has said that Meghan feels she cannot “risk” reuniting with her estranged dad in case he releases mention of their meeting to the press.
“When it comes to Meghan, there’s just a complete lack of trust," he told Fox News.
"She just doesn’t know that, if she were to reach out, if that will result in Thomas immediately going out and selling the story to tabloids. She can’t risk it.”
The Duchess of Sussex has not spoken to dad Thomas since 2018, after he organised a staged photoshoot just before she got married to Prince Harry.
He was noticeably absent from the former Royals’ wedding ceremony after suffering a heart attack and undergoing emergency surgery – and still hasn’t seen his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
“It’s very sad because the reality is, Thomas isn’t getting any younger,” Andrew Morton added. “And he has yet to meet his grandchildren."
The Royal biographer said he thinks that any repairing of the relationship may not be possible at this point.
"The damage has been done," he continued. "So where do you go from here? How can you get that trust back, completely? It is a sad story from all sides."
Meghan's dad Thomas has previously deemed the fallout between the families “childish”.
He said: "This is way too childish, it’s kind of silly. It’s time to talk to each other, those kids will grow up without knowing they have two families.”
Thomas also claimed he thought Harry had "abandoned" his family after stepping down from his role as a senior Royal.
“I think Harry has abandoned the Queen, the Royal Family, the British people and the Army. He's abandoned them all,” he said on Good Morning Britain this year.
In another appearance on the show, he discussed his estrangement from daughter Meghan and his hopes for a reconciliation between them in the future: “I’m very disappointed about it. I’ve apologised about what happened at least a hundred times or so.
“Bottom line is, I've never heard back from Meghan or Harry in any way, shape or form. When they say that I’m marrying and taking advantage of the press, well basically what I do – because I haven’t heard from them – is I’ll do a story for the press.
“I would love to hear from them.”
He added: “She didn’t lose me. I would have always been there for her. I’m there for her now if she wants me, but it’s been a long time.”
