Michael Owen admits jealousy of bond between wife and Gemma drove him to counselling

Michael Owen once admitted that he was jealous of the bond between his wife Louise and his eldest daughter, 19 year old Love Island star Gemma.

The former Liverpool and England footballing hero made the confession in his 2014 autobiography, detailing a fraught time in his mental health after his football glory.

Writing in his 2020 autobiography Reboot, Michael said: "To my surprise, I found myself standing at a figurative cliff edge in 2014.

"A lifetime of that certain type of mentality, of behaviour, had led me to a point where I had to seek professional help…

He continued: "For years, because of my own inner demons, I was intentionally really hard on Louise about subjects that I knew would push her buttons most — not least her close relationship with our daughter Gemma."

He continued: "Let me be very clear and say that none of this was in any way a reflection on how I felt about either Gemma or Louise. I love them both with all of me.

"I’d take everything out on Louise, though. I’d accuse her of spending all her time with her eldest and ignoring the other kids.

"It wasn’t even true."

He also revealed that his mental health struggle nearly led to divorce, before he sought help from a psychiatrist from his footballing days.

In his autobiography he wrote: “I stared into an abyss called divorce, panicking… The whole process was a revelation.”

Michael married his childhood sweetheart Louise in 2005, and the pair share four children together, Gemma, James Michael, Emily May and Jessica.

Michael's eldest daughter has become the talk of the country after she was entered the Love Island villa when the latest series of the hit matchmaking show kicked off last Monday.

Prior to Gemma's entrance into the show, Michael told ITV News: "I have no doubts that she will make us all proud. It’s probably a father’s worst nightmare, but whatever she wants to do. You’ve got to be supportive.

"It’s been different without her in the house. I’ve got other kids and my wife, and it’s been quite tough because she’s had to switch her phone off and we’ve had no contact for a couple of weeks so that’s been the hard bit.”

Dressage rider Gemma has been dominating the storylines in Love Island over the past week.

Initially, she was paired with 22 year old Welsh student, Liam Llewellyn, who the public chose for her.

The arrival of 27 year old Davide Sanclimenti saw Gemma's head was swiftly turned though, and Davide chose to partner up with her, leaving Liam single.

After struggling to form any other connections, Liam announced his decision to leave the villa.

Gemma is currently coupled up with 23 year old fishmonger Luca Bish, who chose her in the dramatic recoupling on Friday night, before her ex-boyfriend Jacques O'Neill dramatically entered the villa.
