Piers Morgan hits out at 'irrelevant' Met Gala and picks 'worst dressed' celebs

Piers Morgan has hit out at the Met Gala, calling the exclusive event ‘preposterous’ and ‘irrelevant’.

Fashion’s biggest party took place in New York last night, as musicians, actors, models, athletes and designers rubbed shoulders in haute couture to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art.

Attendees celebrated American fashion as part of the theme In America: A Lexicon of Fashion in outrageous looks ranging from a suit of armour (Lil Nas X) to a full balaclava (Kim Kardashian).

While social media was ablaze with fashion fans dissecting every look, Piers, who as of yet has never attended the Met Gala, had his claws out for the event and basically 90% of the outfits.

The former Good Morning Britain presenter wrote in his column for the Mail Online: ‘The Met Gala’s always been a preposterous load of old twaddle as people with too much money and not enough brain cells wear absurd clothes that no normal person would ever be seen dead in, let alone spend $1000s on buying.

‘This year, against the backdrop of a global pandemic that’s exposed so much of celebrity culture as a pointlessly aggravating waste of space when millions of real people are dying from a killer virus, or losing their jobs, it seemed even more irrelevant than ever.’

Among his targets was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic congresswoman who attended the Met Gala in a Brother Vellies gown with ‘Tax the rich’ emblazoned on the back.

Piers branded the politician a ‘flaming hypocrite’, saying she had ‘lectured’ the world on the evils of capitalism prior to attending the ‘most materialistic, vacuous, obscenely ostentatious example of capitalism imaginable’.

The 56-year-old continued to slam event co-chair Naomi Osaka, saying her Louis Vuitton outfit, designed to reflect her Japanese and American heritage would have been ‘better suited to a horror-themed Halloween party’.

He said that the tennis star was ‘as sulky faced as ever’ and claimed her outfit ‘screamed “give me attention”.’

Piers then took aim at Kim Kardashian, mocking her look that fully covered her face and saying: ‘Ironically, she looked better than I’ve seen her for years.’

The journalist took particular umbrage with outfits making political points, like Cara Delevingne and Dan Levy, and put Billie Eilish, Serena Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Simone Biles, Debbie Harry, Kim Petras and Lil Nas X in line for ‘worst outfit’.

Piers did, however, praise Channing Tatum for showing up in a plain suit, and Kaia Gerber for looking elegant in an Oscar de la Renta gown.

While Piers reckons the Met Gala has ‘jumped the shark’, we doubt Anna Wintour will think twice about throwing it again next year.

The Met Gala has been running since 1973 and has raised over $200million (£144m) for the museum.
