Rose Ayling-Ellis received a silent applause from the live audience as she became the first ever deaf contestant on Strictly Come Dancing on Saturday.  

After performing the Jive, the EastEnders actress, 26, made her way over to the judges where she was met by Tess Daly using sign language to applaud and congratulate her. 

Rose made history on the first live show of the series as she danced to Shake It Off by Taylor Swift with Giovanni Pernice.

Rose is learning the routines by ‘feeling the vibrations’ and ‘reading her partner’s body language’ – after admitting she can barely hear music. 

She told told MailOnline that while she enjoys listening to music, she can’t identify lyrics so, will rely on the beat and counting in her head to master timings. 

On the show, while she admitted to disliking the energetic dance, which she learned with the help of an intepretor, Rose was praised for being ‘full of personality’ and having ‘very good’ feet, and earned 22 points out of 40.

Anton Du Beke said: ‘I find feet very difficult, I thought this was the most fun I’ve had watching a dance for a long time, you dance solo beautifully, you take that enthusiasm with that partner a full performance well done.’

Giovanni took to Instagram after the dance to post a heartfelt message to his partner. 

He wrote in the caption alongside a picture of Rose: ‘The most proud teacher I have been in a long time !! You are a beautiful and talent human @rose.a.e.!! Well done on our fist dance !! Week 2 here we come ..’

Many people took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the momentous dance.

Another penned: ‘She’s breaking boundaries and looking gorgeous whilst doing it so what a queen.’

One viewer glowed: ‘So impressed with Rose. How she dances just on vibration and beat without hearing the music is totally amazing. Needs to be really brought out by the judges how remarkable this lady and Giovanni are.’ 

Another fumed about Shirley’s low scoring of four for the dance by writing: ‘I think we can all agree that rose was absolutely robbed with shirley’s scoring tonight… it’s so clear which young woman she has unfortunately chosen to dislike for no reason this yea [rolling eyes emoji]’

A stunned Anton said: ‘About as good as we’ve ever seen! We’ve just dropped into week 9 or something, not much to say except that was absolutely remarkable, completely brilliant.’

Robert Webb and Dianne Buswell also brought entertainment to the show with their fun-filled Cha Cha to Rasputin by Boney M, with Shirley joking it was a ‘trip down memory lane’ with their 70s-inspired dance set at the Moscow Latina Dance Championship.

Shirley added: ‘You definitely have the gift of entertaining, the costuming did remind me of 1976, thank you for a trip down memory lane, entertaining but definitely needs a lot of work, the foot action needs a lot of work for me.’ 

Ahead of the launch of the new series, it was revealed that three professional dancers on Strictly Come Dancing have refused to get Covid jabs, leaving some contestants reluctant to pair with them. 

The trio are reportedly the only three pro dancers out of 18 who have not been vaccinated for the BBC hit show, and their identities have not been revealed. 

BBC bosses are said to now be fearful that there could be a larger outbreak among those participating in the show.
