The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge enjoyed a cosy family trip to the pub in Norfolk with their three children this weekend, as royal expert Katie Nicholl tells OK! that the locals fierce protectiveness of the royal pair help them enjoy family days out and date nights.

Kate and William divide their time between their home at Kensington Palace in London and Anmer Hall in Norfolk and are regularly spotted at the supermarkets, pubs and even on the local beaches.

"If you speak to anyone from North Norfolk, they're incredibly proud that William and Kate are continuing a love affair with Norfolk that goes back generations," Katie says.

She adds: "Kate and William tend to go to the same places and these are places where they are known and have a good relationship with the landlord or landlady.

"They've been going to these places for a long time, so it's not unusual and it's not difficult for them to go and relax.

"The locals are incredibly protective of them. you don't often see people get out their camera phones and recording them. They are left to just get on with a family occasion. "

Whilst Kate and William are doting parents to their three children Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, Katie adds that they also love to escape for romantic date nights together.

"Norfolk is one of the few places they can just enjoy ordinary, every day experiences as a family," Katie explains. "William and Kate often go out on date nights and you don't hear about it. They pick places that they like. "

Fans were delighted when a photo of the Cambridges sat at a pub table emerged over the weekend.

Prince William, 39, could be seen tucking into a burger, while wife Kate Middleton, 39, and their children were also sat around enjoying a meal out.

Dressed in a T-shirt and trousers, hair tied back in a ponytail, Kate sat with her sons either side at the casual picnic table.

Royal expert Katie also revealed to OK! that the couple will employ a covert security detail on their family days out and date nights.

"There will have been a security detail with Kate and William and the children on their recent pub lunch outing but it would have been a discreet," she explains.

"A plain clothed and unidentifiable security guard who was positioned at another table. They would have blended in with the rest of the pub."
