As the Royal Variety Performance airs on ITV this evening, many social media users have rushed to Twitter to comment on the “poor attendance” from the Royal Family. Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex were invited to represent the family, with many fans expecting to see the new King or his son Prince William in the royal box.

Poor attendance from the Royal Family!

Held at the Royal Albert Hall, the Royal Variety has been running since 1912 and includes a range of performances, from comedy and music to dance magic and speciality acts.

The annual celebration of talent raises money for the Royal Variety Charity, of which the new King is a life patron and will this year be honouring the life of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Senior members of the British Royal Family attend in person each year, with King Charles joining multiple times over the years.

However, many social media users took to Twitter to comment on the “poor” attendance from the Royals as Prince Edward and his wife represented the family.

Neilsayer1 said: “Blimey. Are they the best Royals they could find for the #RoyalVarietyPerformance? Edward and his wife?!”

ShamWez added: “I wonder if they pull short straws out of a crown for which Royal should attend the #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

Jodiepell_x commented: “Poor attendance from the Royal Family #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

Michael1980 chimed: “Oh C***** they’ve got the B list Royals out this year #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

JuniperBerry shared: “The most underrated royals Sophie and Edward #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

Arkaiana0 also cheered on the royals as she wrote: “Sophie is a brilliant royal to have there. She actually looks like she wants to be out enjoying herself #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”

The show was the first to take place since Queen Elizabeth II died, although she had not attended the show since 2012.

Many Twitter users expected to see his Majesty at the event though he has not attended the show since 2016.

He did appear to deliver a video message at the start of the 2020 show but has not been present for the show since.

Last year’s show saw the attendance of Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton who stunned in an emerald sequin dress.

Recorded on Thursday, December 1, this year’s performance was attended by Prince Edward and his wife Sophie at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

This marks the first time that Edward and Sophie have gone to the event and represented the royals at a Royal Variety show.

As the Queen herself had not attended since 2012, it would seem Charles being now the head of the monarchy, is continuing the tradition of allowing younger Royals the chance to represent the family at the event.

Tonight’s show was hosted by comedian Lee Mack and included performances from Nile Rodgers & Chic, George Ezra, Ellie Goulding, Sam Ryder, Becky Hill, the cast of the musical Cabaret and the cast of Cirque du Soleil.

On tonight’s show, however, viewers were also left annoyed by Prince Edward as he did not sing the national anthem.

Social media user James Danson exclaimed: “Absolutely disgraceful!!! Prince Edward not even singing the national anthem!! #RoyalVarietyPerformance.”
