Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says fans will have to wait until late 2023 or 2024 for season two of the mega-hit Netflix series

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that fans will have to wait until the end of 2023 or 2024 to watch season two of the mega-hit Netflix series.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 50-year-old South Korean director explained that he in the middle of final discussions with the streaming giant about the survival thriller’s highly anticipated second season.

However, the Silenced helmer told the outlet that he could not share many details about what fans could expect from the second installment, as he ‘only has three pages worth of ideas that he plans to turn into a script.’

Hwang confirmed that breakout star Lee Jung-jae will be back as main character Seong Gi-hun, though he could not guarantee the return of the mysterious Front Man (Lee Byun-hun).

He assured fans that Squid Game season two would include more games, teasing, ‘Humanity is going to be put to a test through those games once again.’   

The Fortress director also shared his thoughts on whether the series’ second season would explore similar themes as its first iteration.

‘I want to ask the question, “Is true solidarity between humans possible?” Hwang said.   

In January, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that Squid Game had been renewed for a second season.

Sarandos was on a fourth-quarter earnings conference call with investors when he was asked whether or not there will be a second season.

‘Absolutely. The ‘Squid Game universe has just begun,’ Sarandos said, indicating fans could see much more than just a new season.

He included Squid Game into the same category as shows he sees with the potential for growth outside of the flagship series. 

Sarandos added that there could be potential for live experiences along with games and other merchandise.

He also singled out other hits like Bridgerton, which debuted its second season in March and Stranger Things, which has its fourth season debuting this summer, also in this rarified air with Squid Game.

At the time, Sarandos didn’t offer any other details about the second season of Squid Game, such as returning cast members or if the creative team will still be intact.

While Sarandos’ statement was the first official confirmation from Netflix that a second season was happening, Hwang has previously indicated there were plans in the works.

‘There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!’ Hwang told the AP.

‘But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently,’ he added.  

The show follows a group of 456 people chosen to partake in a series of bizarre and deadly games for a chance at winning billions.

The show’s first season ended with quite the natural lead-in for a second season, with Gi-hun going on a quest to figure out who’s running this sadistic game, instead of seeing his daughter in Los Angeles.

 Squid Game set a new record as Netflix’s most-watched show in history, with over 1.65 billion hours viewed by subscribers in the first 28 days of release.

The show also made history by becoming the first non-English-language TV series to be nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, with four nominations in total.

Its nominations included Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for Lee, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for Jung Ho-yeon, Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble, and Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble. 

In February, Squid Game made history again when it won in three of its four nominated categories at the SAG Awards with acting wins for both Lee and Jung and the show taking home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.

The series had also earned three Golden Globe nominations, including South Korean veteran actor Oh Yeong-su winning Best Supporting Actor in a Series for his portrayal of Oh Il-nam/Player 001.
