The Weeknd performs from a thousand feet in the air while opening the show at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, which aired on Sunday (August 30).
The 30-year-old singer wore prosthetic bloody makeup and bruises while singing his song “Blinding Lights” from Edge at Hudson Yards in downtown New York City. A helicopter flew around the building and shined lights on him while he sang!
The performance ended with a giant fireworks display, which lit up the Big Apple a few days ago. New Yorkers were caught off guard by the fireworks when they happened and everyone has been wondering what they were for. Now we know!
In a recent interview, The Weeknd said that his song “Blinding Lights” is about drunk driving. The makeup likely was in reference to the aftermath of many drunk driving incidents.
“‘Blinding Lights’ [is about] how you want to see someone at night, and you’re intoxicated, and you’re driving to this person and you’re just blinded by streetlights,” he told Esquire. “But nothing could stop you from trying to go see that person, because you’re so lonely. I don’t want to ever promote drunk driving, but that’s what the dark undertone is.”
Earlier this weekend, The Weeknd debuted a brand new song with another big artist.
