Essentials: Younker Hong

Ten years ago, Younker Hong left his job in finance and dove into the study of clothing, setting the foundations for his contemporary fashion label Randomevent.

In an era when local trends in his home country were in disarray, setting up a streetwear brand seemed fleeting and unsustainable. However, fast-forward a decade,  Hong’s Randomevent has successfully built itself a position on the global stage, leading collaborations with the likes of Gramicci, Reebok, Dickies, Medicom Toy, and New Balance. As part of the early batch of streetwear labels out of China, Randomevent has found its voice in the internet age, fusing tradition with youth culture from the past and present.

Based in Shanghai, Randomevent has several locations and stockists around the country, and founder Younker Hong is constantly on the go. For our latest Essentials installment, Hong shares his travel must-haves including his camera of choice, favorite carrying options, fragrances, and more.

Randomevent Canvas Tote Bag

This is one of the few bags in our Fall/Winter collection this year. I’m a person who loves to use tote bags, so I made one with our theme this year. I usually like to use a larger capacity bag, but for practical considerations, we made it in a normal size. The wash canvas materials ensure its durability, whether it’s for a short trip or a daily outing.

Leica M10-R

I’ve wanted to buy a Leica M camera for a long time but didn’t have a chance to for certain reasons. This year, I bought the M10 R with the premise of recording family life. Now, whether it’s for a business or leisure, I take it with me. I don’t export the photos every time after recording, so just like a film camera, I carry some fragments and moments of my life with me.

Byredo Sellier + retaW Solid Perfume Portable Balm

Both of these are perfume products that I’ve been enjoying lately. One is from Byredo and the other is from Retaw. This Byredo Sellier has some woody flavor in it, but at the same time, it’s a little different from other woody tones. The Sellier belongs to the extrait series, so spraying it once is equivalent to spraying a regular perfume three times. The effect of the balm is more long-lasting than the perfume, and it can be kept for a long time by squeezing a little on the hand or neck. It’s also more convenient to carry.

Randomevent x Stanley Classic Vacuum Bottle

This is a thermos that Randomevent made in collaboration with Stanley last year. It may look a little old-fashioned, but because I communicate a lot during work, I often get thirsty and use this cup to make tea every day before going out. Stanley’s products are made with high quality materials and are great at holding heat, so it’s an item that I use every day.

Thom Browne Sunglasses

Before, I tried to add sunglasses lenses to regular glasses myself, but one day I came across the Thom Browne two-in-one glasses. After looking into it, I came to understand that it was one of the few two-in-one styles from the brand. I personally was more accustomed to wearing glasses with smaller frames, so I bought it without much hesitation. I always have two glasses when I go out to prevent damage from sports or other situations.
