Make room, Big Little Lies fandom — there’s a celebrity superstar among our ranks. Ahead of the season 2 finale, Keith Urban chose an outfit with a built-in shout-out to the Monterey Five. His wife, Nicole Kidman, shared a photo of Urban’s Big Little Lies sweater, which Kidman’s series’ co-stars Laura Dern, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley have all reacted to. Hint? They’re fans of the country crooner just as much as he is of them.
The cute social media exchange over BLL started Sunday night when Urban adorably showed support for his wife’s hit show. “OMG — can’t believe it’s already here,” Urban captioned the Instagram. “Make sure u all tune in tonight to the BLL finale (… of Season 2)!!!!!” In the picture, Urban can be seen wearing a dark sweater emblazoned with bright white letters spelling out the names of the five main characters, aka the Monterey Five: Celeste (Kidman), Jane (Woodley), Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz), Renata (Dern) and Madeline (Witherspoon).
Kidman shared the photo on her own feed Monday, simply captioning the post with a red heart emoji. Most of the other members of the Monterey Five quickly followed suit in expressing their appreciation. Witherspoon commented with three heart-eye emojis, while Woodley exclaimed, “Love this!!!” But Dern took it a step further by paying Urban a BLL-themed compliment. “How did we get so lucky that this human would be the Monterey Five’s fiercest champion?!” she wrote, noting, “FYI, Renata is an obsessive Keith Urban fan.”
Can we just bask for a moment in how sweet Urban’s show of support for his wife and her female co-stars is? And how wonderful it is that the women took the time to acknowledge and appreciate it? BLL makes big little beautiful things happen, which is precisely why we need another season (OK, OK, we’ll stop campaigning… for now).
In all seriousness, though, it would seem Urban has been a steadfast supporter of the show — for which Kidman serves as a co-executive producer — since the beginning. In 2017, Kidman opened up about how she sometimes struggled to leave work on the set after filming the physically and emotionally intense scenes with Alexander Skarsgård (who played her character’s abusive husband, Perry) required of season one. “Because we were shooting for so long… I think the duration of [the production] slowly started to seep in,” Kidman told Entertainment Tonight. “Normally I can step back into my family life in a very easy way. I mean, not always, but you know, usually. I’ve been working a long time now. But it was hard.”
However, coming home to a supportive spouse had a profound impact on Kidman. “Luckily, I have a partner who is artistic, so he understands what it takes to support that,” she said of BLL’s “fiercest champion,” Urban. “[He] would hold me, and I was really upset at times. Really damaged and really upset and physically and emotionally drained and in pain… Luckily I have that at home and I also have people I can talk to and get it out.”
