Volkswagen's Polo GTI Is a Hot Hatch for the City Streets

Volkswagen and its GTI badge are synonymous with producing some of the most reliable, resilient, and enjoyable hot hatches — its Golf GTI range needs no introduction — but what happens when you apply this sensibility to something even smaller, like the Polo? Well, Volkswagen has just done that, revealing the sixth-generation Polo GTI to the mass market today.

Poised as a hot hatch for the city roads, this little Polo now comes with a two-liter turbocharged four-pot engine that produces 204 BHP and is good for a 0-62 MPH time of 6.5 seconds, before going onto 150 MPH. Of course, this city car is front-wheel-drive, but systems and components such as a seven-speed DSG gearbox and an electronically locking differential, IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, Lane Assist and predictive adaptive cruise control will help you keep the front wheels pointing in the right direction.

Naturally, there’s a sports chassis that’s 15mm lower than the standard model, while all around you’ll find sporty aesthetical upgrades that rework the sixth-gen model’s look. For example, GTI badging and red stripes, a dual-exit pipe, new rims, a new set of angular LED taillights and the redesigned LED matrix headlights and an illuminated radiator grille all come together to make the Polo GTI look small yet mightily aggressive.
