The motoring organisation called for VAT to be axed on sales of costly electric vehicles to accelerate uptake. It said two thirds of nearly 15,000 members polled agreed with the tax break.
AA president Edmund King said: “Many drivers still feel priced out of the electric car market.”
Drivers also want more rapid charge points and a scrappage scheme for petrol and diesel cars.
The Express’s Green Britain Needs You campaign has called for zero VAT on products producing little or no greenhouse gas emissions.
New electric cars carry VAT at 20 percent – the same level as polluting petrol and diesel vehicles.
Sale of new petrol and diesel cars will be banned after 2030.
