Meghan Markle has been in the spotlight more than ever since welcoming her and Prince Harry’s son, Archie Harrison, in early May. The new mom has been stepping out more often within the past few weeks, although she’s not officially back from maternity leave just yet. One thing that has remained consistent is how much negative press she has been receiving – even though she’s a mom, the critics haven’t let up. While Markle hasn’t given any indication thus far about how the negativity is affecting her, she did recently make one revealing comment that could betray her feelings about her life in the spotlight.
Meghan Markle has received a lot of criticism lately
After Markle gave birth to Archie Harrison on May 6th, royal watchers wondered whether or not the public’s reactions towards Markle would be any different. From the very beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry, haters have found various reasons to dislike Markle. As it turned out, becoming a mother didn’t change the difficult situation that Markle faces every day with the public and press. Since giving birth, Markle has weathered several scandals.
She received serious criticism from many American news outlets when she failed to return from maternity leave early in order to meet with President Trump during his June visit to England. Markle was judged harshly in the press when her security team denied some fans the opportunity to take photos of her during an outing to Wimbledon.
Most recently, Markle was mom-shamed for the way she held baby Archie at a polo match that she attended with Kate Middleton. It seems as though no matter what she does, the press will find something wrong with it.
Meghan Markle has put on a brave face in public
In spite of the negativity, Markle has only been seen smiling and chatting during her rare, recent public appearances. If the pressures of fame and constant tabloid scrutiny are getting to her, she hasn’t voiced those concerns out loud to anyone willing to share the story.
Still, there’s a very good reason why Markle is staying so silent. The royal family’s longtime policy has been to not address negative rumors openly. A recent news story discussed the reasons why, if Markle truly is reaching her breaking point, she’s being so quiet about it. Rather than feed into the press’s stories, she follows Queen Elizabeth’s “never complain, never explain” rule.
Meghan Markle opened up to Pharrell
While we might never see Markle giving a tell-all interview, she did let one comment slip that explains a lot about her life lately. At the premiere of The Lion King, a star-studded event which Markle and Prince Harry attended, she met singer Pharrell in the receiving line. The talented performer praised the couple’s relationship and said, “we cheer you guys on.” Markle responded to his words of support by saying: “Oh, thank you. They don’t make it easy.”
She offered no further clarification on who “they” are, but it can easily be assumed that she meant the news media in general. The constant negativity and overblown stories about her demeanor, behavior, and lifestyle choices are likely very frustrating, and only more so for a new mother who is still trying to learn and adapt to a major change in her life.
Whether or not the media will ever ease up on the hounding of Markle remains to be seen. Certainly, she will be dealing with the struggles of public life for as long as she’s in the royal family, but hopefully, there comes a point where she is able to find some peace with her portrayal in the media.
