For the past year, accessorising an outfit hasn’t gone much further than picking a jazzy face mask.
All the usual accoutrements — statement sunglasses, layers of necklaces, pretty patterned scarves, the perfect bag, lovely new shoes — fell by the wayside. Loungewear doesn’t call for much adornment.
So now we must rediscover the art — and joy — of accessorising; the part of getting dressed that is the most fun. After all, experimenting with cocktail rings and handbags is a lot less fraught than trying on clothes.
The right accessories polish and perfect. They can elevate or dress down a look instantly. They infuse your style with your unique personality.

In short, they are the delicious icing on the cake. So, having been denied these sartorial flourishes for so long, if you want to pile it on, go for it.
Coco Chanel may have advised: ‘Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.’ But after a year of lockdown, leaving the house is a now thrilling event and deserves celebrating with a more-is-more attitude.
Let’s begin with handbags. Put down the sturdy canvas totes and supermarket bags-for-life and treat yourself to something that’s main purpose is to look nice.
Straw bags are here to stay and Whistles’ half-moon bag with contrasting blue steel strap dodges ‘twee’ territory. A bamboo handle also feels subtly summery. If you’re not familiar with Charles & Keith, it’s worth checking out the brand, particularly the modern bags with stylish detailing that come at a reasonable price.

Moving on to shoes, flat or a low heel are the way to go this season. Mules, sling-backs and slip-on styles that won’t make you feel overdressed but are a welcome change to wearing white trainers again.
LK Bennett’s acid-yellow block heels or Asos’s ruffled red sliders are pretty but punchy, and amp up an outfit just the right amount. Now, for the best bit: jewellery. Set aside subtlety. An eye-catching watch, a big chain bracelet or chunky bangle and lots of shiny rings to go with our newly manicured hands.
It’s worth sorting out your jewellery box (there will undoubtedly be treasures you have forgotten): give them all a good clean and get any repairs done
