I wanted to get my tubes tied at 22 but doctor blocked me – its sexist

A woman who wanted to be sterilised was furious with her gynaecologist's reaction.

Olivia Downs, 22, said she made up her mind not to have children and wanted to go ahead with an operation to "have her tubes tied".

But she believes the response to her request was "sexist".

The gynaecologist apparently advised Olivia that she might "meet Mr Right" one day and change her mind.

Detailing the conversation in her now-viral TikTok post, the content creator said: "Hi Mrs Gynaecologist, my name is Olivia, I never want children.

"I have had this made up in my mind since I was old enough to think of the concept. Can I please have my tubes tied?"

Olivia then plays the doctor's role, saying: "No. It's permanent."

She says: "Yeah I know. That's why I asked, I'd like that option."

The doctor continues: "Well, no, you might meet Mr Right one day and change your mind."

The young woman replies with a firm answer saying that it's not in her 50-year plan and she doesn't want any children.

In the end, she left the clinic with a brochure of an IUD (intrauterine device).

Olivia reassured to her viewers by saying: "Whoever I end up with, I'm going to ensure that they also want to be child-free."

Like-minded women shared their thoughts, as one noted: "This, yes, I never wanted and never will want kids! I will be 40 in four years."

A second said: "I've always hated the 'what if you meet a man?' argument because, yes, let's make life decisions on the chance a man comes into the picture."

Olivia stressed that the issue is "way more than just a choice of lifestyle" but a systemic issue in the healthcare system.

"It is annoying that we are always constantly being told 'no', but never being forced to have these children, to be quite frankly with you, that are unwanted," she added.
