Increase your chances of winning McDonalds Monopoly game while saving money

The popular McDonald’s Monopoly giveaway game is back — and this year there's twice the chance of winning.

The fast food chain started the sticker-collecting phenomenon back in 1987 in the US and it has proved a success since being deployed in the UK.

Bosses at the golden arches say they have given away millions of prizes to customers as part of the game, including instant win menu items, shopping vouchers, weekend breaks, technology, cars and cash prizes.

According to McDonald’s, in 2018 alone more than eight million prizes were claimed, including six Mini Coopers, three £100,000 cash prizes and two £25k cash giveaways.

So here is the lowdown on how to win prizes and tips to increase your chances of winning now the latest game, launched on September 7, is underway.

How the Monopoly Game works in 2022

How McDonald's Monopoly works is that certain menu items come with stickers to peel off and collect.

Some stickers act as “properties” like on a Monopoly board, while others are straightforward food prizes that can be redeemed instantly.

Prizes can be claimed once a player has nabbed all the properties in a particular colour set.

For example, bagging the set of green properties — Regent Street, Oxford Street and Bond Street — will win a lucky punter an electric Mini-Cooper car.

This year, every physical property sticker comes with an extra chance to win a prize or gain a property.

But that doesn’t mean it is going to be easy pickings. There are only five of the top prize — £100,000 in cash — to find, meaning players will have to be savvy and not a little bit lucky to come away with the big draw gifts.

Tips on how to increase your chances of winning McDonald's Monopoly game

Choose wisely

Firstly, in the McDonald’s 2022 Monopoly game, not all menu items are equals.

There are a whole host of fan favourites that don’t come with prize-building stickers, so those intent on giving themselves the best chance of winning should avoid those – while saving some cash.

Love a Big Mac? Well, forget about it for a few months while the game is on. Same goes for a Quarter Pounder and McChicken Sandwich.

  • People are only just realising why McDonald's chicken nugget boxes have holes in

Instead, look for the pieces that do come with stickers.

So for example, if you’re in the mood for chicken nuggets, why not put your brave face on and try the Spicy Chicken Nugget specials which do come with a sticker peel, unlike its less fiery sibling?

Here’s what you need to pick up to be in with a chance of building a healthy property collection and giving yourself the best shot at some freebies:

  • Any cold drink
  • Fries
  • McFlurry
  • Big Tasty
  • Big Tasty with Bacon
  • McPlant (new/vegan)
  • Big Flavour Wraps
  • The Spicy Veggie Wrap
  • 6 Spicy Chicken Nuggets (new)
  • 9 Spicy Chicken McNuggets (new)
  • 20 Spicy Chicken McNuggets Sharebox (new)
  • 3 Chicken Selects
  • 5 Chicken Selects
  • Chicken Legend
  • Cheese Sharebox
  • Mozzarella Dippers
  • McDonald’s Premium Salad

Double your chances of winning

McDonald’s is promoting 2022 as the year of the “double peel” when it comes to the Monopoly game.

As well as acting as a digital version of the board game for you to hoard all your properties, scanning each sticker into the McDonald's app gives players a second chance at winning.

Doing so will give you the chance to acquire more properties or be entered into draws for the prizes on offer, meaning downloading the app to play along should shorten the odds on landing a prize.

Don’t lose those rare stickers

As you would expect with a game giving away some huge-ticket prizes, there are less of some to go round than others.

So while there are more than two million Extra Value Meals to giveaway — won by collecting all the brown properties — there are only 80 £2k holidays with TUI on offer for those who secure all three yellow card properties.

So if you get one of the rarer cards listed below, scan it into the app and keep it somewhere safe in case you are cashing in your winnings later by finding the whole set.

According to Save the Student, here are 2022’s rarest stickers:

  • Stations: Liverpool St Station – SeeTickets £250 Events Voucher (510 available)
  • Brown: Old Kent Road – free McDonald's medium Extra Value Meal or Big Flavour Wraps meal (2.1m available)
  • Light Blue: Euston Road – Wireless earbuds from Skullcandy (1,650 available)

McDonald's is also giving out Gold Cards as part of the prize package, with some lucky diners set to find their pass to winning a free meal from the fast foot outlet every week for a year.
