A school's decision to introduce gender-neutral toilets has led to "huge anger" among parents, a mum has said.
Claire Harmer started a petition after the oversubscribed school her teenage daughter attends made the landmark change after Christmas.
The 35-year-old mum believes it will "increase the risk of sexual assault" and claims male pupils have joked about installing cameras to film the girls.
An unnamed female student, who signed the petition, said it is "influencing perverting at a such a young age" while students may be tempted into having a "quickie during lessons", reports LeicestershireLive .
New College in New Parks, Leicester, has clarified only a select few of its toilets are unisex and it was done to "cope with the large number of extra students".
However, Claire maintains that the majority of the toilets have become gender neutral not just a select few.
The concerned mum, whose daughter Ellie-May, 15, is a pupil at the Glenfield Road School, is adamant it is a "massive safeguarding issue".
“Anything could be going on in those cubicles," she continued.
“You wouldn’t think it was okay if you saw a boy coming out of the girls’ toilet at a school.”
With Ellie-May due to take her GCSEs in the summer, her mum said the extra stress for her daughter and her peers is not helpful.
“They’re coming up for their GCSEs and that’s got them worried enough without this.
“When they’re having their periods they don’t want to be in a stall next to a boy.”
A female student at the college was one of those who signed the petition and wrote online: "This is ridiculous!"
She went on to say having "no privacy" when changing a tampon or a pad is "disgusting".
“Already boys have been gathering together around the toilets which makes such an uncomfortable atmosphere," she continued.
Claire said the success of the petition is "better than I imagined".
“The school says there are still separate boys and girls toilets in the school but Ellie-May said the majority of them had been changed to gender neutral,” she added.
Fiona Rogers, careers and marketing manager at the school , said: “After an amazing couple of years, New College Leicester has become really popular.
"We have an increased number of students on roll and we are well over-subscribed for first choice places in September this year, as well as having a waiting list for all current year groups.
“Because of this and to ensure that we meet the needs of all students, we have re-designated a few of our toilets to be unisex/gender neutral in order to cope with the large number of extra students.
“However, there are still gender specific toilets available for all students.”
