Savvy mum creates giant DIY wall-mounted book advent calendar for just £20

It’s almost December and that means advent calendars!

The sound of little ones rushing to open the doors in the morning is one of the festive season’s best bits.

And parents have been getting more and more creative with their home made versions.

After all, an advent calendar doesn’t have to be just chocolates.

Renata Kostialova, 40, from Leeds, created an incredible wall-mounted book advent calendar for her son Harry, two.

The mum, who works as a payroll and accounts coordinator, is over the moon with the results which cost just £20.

She told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk : “I’m always looking for budget ways to recreate or improve on items that I have seen in the shops.

“I was sat looking at the bare wall in his room, and the idea for the mega book advent calendar just popped into my head.

“He’s only young, but he’s recently started taking more of an interest in books and reading, so I thought it would be something we could enjoy together.

“I could have put the books in a nice box under the Christmas tree, but I wanted something that was very visual and on display.”

Renata bought her books from The Works when they had a 10 books for £10 offer on.

She explained: “It was the best £20 I ever spent.

“I already had the wrapping paper, the white card for the number cutouts, and the clear glue dots at home from previous crafts.”

Renata continued: “It took just two hours in total.

“Wrapping the 24 books took me around one hour.

“For the last parcel, marked 24 Dec, there was an obvious choice: 'The Night Before Christmas'.”

Cutting the numbers out of card and gluing them on took another half and hour and so did sticking them to the wall.

Renata added: “This part was really easy to do, as I used clear glue dots so as not to damage to the wall.

“When Harry woke up to the surprise his face was just a picture.”

The mum shared some snaps of the creation of Facebook and got thousands of likes.

She said: “People have been really nice and supportive and full of praise, which is really great.

“And many of them were thankful, saying they are also going to try it, which I found very flattering.”
