Skincare regimes aren’t just about anti-ageing, Dr Ewoma Ukeleghe NIVEA’s new brand ambassador and dermatologist told Express.co.uk, they are about keeping your skin healthy and happy regardless of how old you are. “It is a privilege to age, therefore, it should never be seen as a negative thing,” she said.
However, not looking after your skin correctly can lead to certain changes occurring at a much faster rate than anticipated.
Dr Ewoma explained: “The most common signs of skin ageing that I’ve seen clinic are loss of skin turgor, significant UV-related hyperpigmentation, and of course, fine lines and wrinkles.”
Though many of these changes come naturally with age, there are some common skincare mistakes people unknowingly make. Dr Ewoma, who is a medical and cosmetic doctor, began her career almost 10 years ago in the NHS and is passionate about Cosmetic Dermatology, something which lead to her founding a her own private practise, SKNDOCTOR.
She explained: “I often find that people worsen their skin without realising it, which usually reveals itself over a period of time.
“The common pitfalls are lack of consistency with their skincare routine, using harsh products that are not suitable for their skin, and not removing makeup correctly.”
Choosing the right skincare products can seem overwhelming in a heavily saturated market, but the key is to identify your skin’s unique needs and then find topical applications which suit them.
“Retinoids are my secret weapon,” said Dr Ewoma. “In order to keep my skin hydrated and bouncy, I apply a ‘moisture sandwich’ where I layer a hydrating serum, rich cream and light oil. I also always wash my face after working out to avoid breakouts.”
But as well as hydrating moisturisers and serums, it’s also about the right protection for your skin.
Although genetics play a crucial role in the lines and wrinkles which develop over time, research has shown the number of wrinkles a person has, and how prominent they are, is often linked with their lifetime sun exposure.
Both mineral and chemical sunscreens prevent symptoms of ageing from forming and take a toll on your skill thanks to their sun-blocking techniques. Mineral sunscreens work by reflecting harsh ultraviolet (UV) rays, while chemical sunscreens absorb these rays and transform them to heat through a chemical reaction.
“SPF of at least 30 should be worn throughout the day and reapplied every two to four hours,” Dr Ewoma explained.

Dr Ewoma’s top skincare picks
As a brand ambassador for NIVEA, it’s unsurprising some of Dr Ewoma’s favourite skincare picks come from the brand. However, she says it is a partnership which feels “natural and authentic”.
She said: “NIVEA Q10 Power products can ensure that skin ageing occurs in line with biological ageing.”
NIVEA Q10 Energy Recharging Night Cream (NIVEA Q10 Energy + Vitamin C)
“This rich cream is packed with ingredients that lock in moisture and support the skin’s barrier whilst you sleep,” explained Dr Ewoma.
“It should be used nightly as the last step of your skincare routine.”
NIVEA Q10 Power 60+ Anti-Wrinkle & Anti-Puffiness Eye Cream
Dr Ewoma said: “This smoothing eye cream de-puffs and rejuvenates the eye contours.”
The cream should be used day and night, and applied with “gentle pressure using your ring finger”.
NIVEA Q10 Power Anti-Wrinkle Ultra Recovery Night Serum
A serum packed with a double concentration of Q10, Dr Ewoma says it works to “refill the skin’s energy reservoir and maximises the natural cycle of repair and regeneration.” Apply at night, just before your night cream.
Express.co.uk review of NIVEA Q10 Power Anti-Wrinkle Ultra Recovery Night Serum
The NIVEA Q10 Power Anti-Wrinkle Ultra Recovery Night Serum comes in a beautifully branded pump bottle adorned with tiny silver stars in line with its nighttime use. I found the pump head of the cream made it fast and easy to incorporate into my nighttime skincare routine.
On my initial use of the product, the first thing I noticed and loved was its scent. Although it’s very lightly scented, there’s something relaxing about it. The product goes onto the skin smoothly, without feeling greasy and I found it to absorb well leaving my face feeling smooth and hydrated.
The serum retails at around £14 for a 30ml bottle, depending on where you buy it, which is a budget-friendly alternative to some high-end brands which do the same job.
