Have you seen Meghan Markle’s new eternity ring yet? The Duchess of Sussex stepped out in June sporting the gorgeous ring, which features dazzling colorful diamonds.
But the style isn’t the only thing that makes the bling unique. There’s a really interesting story behind the ring that will warm your heart.
Prince Harry put a lot of effort into Meghan Markle’s ring
According to Harper’s Bazaar, Prince Harry gifted Markle the ring to celebrate their growing family and their first wedding anniversary in May 2019.
He reportedly worked with renowned jeweler Lorraine Schwartz to create the jewelry and added the birthstones for Markle, their newborn son Archie, and himself on the underside of the ring. Its green emerald is for Archie, its blue sapphire is for Prince Harry, and its olive-green peridot stone is for Markle.
“Meghan was touched,” a source told the publication of the May 19 anniversary surprise. “A lot of thought went into it.”
The publication explains that each gem has its own meaning. People say that sapphires bring protection, emeralds represent rebirth and love, and peridots are a symbol of strength. Aww!
Meghan Markle’s engagement ring got an update, too
So, Prince Harry didn’t stop at the eternity ring. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he also updated Markle’s engagement ring.
The ring features two stones that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana, while its central diamond is from Botswana, where Prince Harry and Markle once vacationed. He had jewelers resize and replace its gold band with a “new delicate diamond band.”

Prince Harry spoke to the BBC about the significance of the ring in late 2017. “The ring is obviously yellow gold because that’s [Meghan’s] favorite,” he explained to the outlet. “And the main stone itself I sourced from Botswana and the little diamonds either side are from my mother’s jewelry collection — to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”
For her part, Markle adores the ring. She told the BBC, “It’s beautiful, and he designed it. It’s incredible.”
The upgraded engagement ring caught backlash
Fans noticed the upgraded engagement ring in June. While some people loved its new design, others slammed Markle over it.
One of those critics is royal expert Ingrid Seward. Seward, who is the author and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, told the press that the decision to alter the ring indicates that Markle does not understand the full importance of the bling.
“I find it a bit odd Meghan would want to alter a ring that her husband had especially designed for her,” Seward said. “A royal engagement ring is a piece of history not a bit of jewelry to be updated when it looks old fashioned,” she continued.

Oof. On the bright side, they at least left Princess Diana’s stones untouched.
