Warning over more Aldi, Asda and Sainsbury’s eggs due to salmonella fears

SHOPPERS have been urged to check more eggs purchased from Aldi, Asda, Costco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's over salmonella fears.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has extended a warning from last month, which found batches of British Lion stamped eggs may be contaminated.

The first warning covered eggs with a batch code of 1UK15270, which you can find stamped on the egg shell.

But the FSA has now extended the safety warning to also include batch codes 0UK15270 and 3UK15270.

The affected eggs were sold in selected supermarkets in England and Wales.

For the full list of affected egg brands and best before dates, see the box below.

The British Lion stamp is a trademark that's supposed to mark eggs as being safe to eat raw or runny as they've been laid by hens that are vaccinated against salmonella.

Symptoms caused by salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

The FSA says you can still eat the eggs as long as they have been thoroughly cooked before eating – the egg yolks and whites should not be eaten runny.

The shells of the eggs could be contaminated with salmonella too, so you should wash hands thoroughly after handling the eggs.

This includes after touching the packaging and eggshells – the FSA says this is best practice with all eggs anyway.

Kitchen surfaces and equipment should be cleaned through after coming into contact with the eggs, including the fridge.

The FSA adds that all eggs should be stored in the fridge until use and should not be eaten after the best before date.

Anyone who is concerned about symptoms should contact their GP.

If you'd rather not eat the eggs you need to contact the supermarket where you bought them from and ask for a refund.

Technically, this isn't a product recall so retailers aren't obliged to give you your money back but some retailers are running their own policy.

Sainsbury's, for example, has confirmed it'll offer refunds to worried customers.

The FSA said it's working with the supermarkets to determine how many boxes of affected eggs were sold.

Only the eggs listed in the box above are affected though. No other eggs sold by these retailers or eggs sold at other shops are affected.

Elsewhere, Aptamil baby cereal on sale at Asda, Boots and Tesco has been recalled over fears it contains pieces of plastic.

Guinness yesterday also recalled cans of its new non-alcoholic drink over fears they are unsafe to consume.

And Asda has recalled kids dressing gowns over fears they could go up in flames if they catch fire.
