Westbrook Studios, Freddy Wexler, Kwame Kwei-Armah Team on Movie Musical ‘Soul Superhero’

Westbrook Studios is partnering with songwriter and producer Freddy Wexler on “Soul Superhero,” a new live action musical fantasy film.

The film is the story of a young Black girl who teams up with a magical street performer, known as the “Soul Superhero,” to save her community with the power of music. The musical feature will draw on a number of different genres, with a soundtrack that will include funk and soul numbers, and a production that will involve huge ensemble dance numbers.

The screenplay is being co-written by Kwame Kwei-Armah and Wexler, based on an original story by Wexler.

Wexler is a multi-platinum award-winner, whose songs have been recorded by many of the best-selling artists working today. He’s penned such hits as ““Stuck With U” for Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande, “Be Kind” for Halsey and Marshmello, “Slow Down” for Selena Gomez, and “Novacane” for Lil Wayne. Other collaborators include Kanye West, Jonas Brothers, Pink, and Demi Lovato. He is also founder and CEO of The Brain Music.

Kwei-Armah is an actor, playwright, and director. He currently serves as the artistic director for the Young Vic in London and was previously artistic director of Baltimore Center Stage. Kwei-Armah most recently wrote “All Rise,” a musical about how Viagra came to market, with “The Trial of the Chicago 7’s” Matt Jackson set to produce and Spike Lee on board to direct.

Westbrook Studios was launched in 2019 by founders Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, Miguel Melendez and Ko Yada. Upcoming projects include “King Richard,” which will star Will Smith as Richard Williams, father to tennis greats Serena and Venus. The company is also planning a remake of “Planes,Trains & Automobiles” starring Will Smith and Kevin Hart.

“‘Soul Superhero’ is a vibrant, contemporary musical about a larger-than-life young girl who’s driven by an intense love for her community,” said Jon Mone, Westbrook Studios Head of Motion Pictures. “Freddy’s impeccable storytelling instincts and proven musical talents combined with Kwame’s inspiring voice and craft make them the perfect pair to tell such a timely, heart-felt story and we are thrilled to partner with them to bring these character’s journeys to life.”

Wexler is represented by CAA and attorney Patti Felker. Kwei-Armah is represented by CAA, Redefine, and United Agents in the UK.
