BTS: Suga Explains Why He Hopes the Group Will 'Land Instead of Falling'

BTS’ single “Permission to Dance” became the band’s fifth song to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. To discuss the success of “Permission to Dance” and their hit single “Butter,” Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook of BTS appeared for an interview on SBS 8 News. In the interview, Suga shared the important meaning behind the song’s lyric, “‘Cause when we fall, we know how to land.”

BTS released ‘Permission to Dance’ to bring joy to fans

On July 9, BTS dropped their third English-language single, “Permission to Dance.” The song was written by Ed Sheeran, Steve Mac, Johnny McDaid, and Jenna Andrews, while Mac, Stephen Kirk, and Andrews produced the track.

The song takes on a positive message similar to BTS’ recent releases like “Dynamite” and “Life Goes On.” With the song, the septet encourages fans to find happiness wherever possible, particularly amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

In the song, the band sings, “We don’t need to worry / ‘Cause when we fall, we know how to land / Don’t need to talk the talk, just walk the walk tonight / ‘Cause we don’t need permission to dance.”

Suga thinks the lyrics of ‘Permission to Dance’ have an important meaning

In the interview with SBS 8 News, Suga was asked about how the lyric “‘Cause when we fall, we know how to land” resonates with the band. Even though the members of BTS did not officially write “Permission to Dance,” Suga thinks the lyric represents a message he has shared on multiple occasions.

“I’ve said several times that I’m afraid of falling but not of landing,” Suga said. “And the difference between falling and landing is that landing means that you can take off again. So, no matter how desperate the situation is, if we choose to land instead of falling, choose to not give up and just land, we’re ready to fly again.”

He continued, “I thought it’s a very appropriate thing to say in current situation, and I could relate to the lyrics while singing. And there are countries where the situation is slowly but surely getting better. Seeing that, I think I am looking for hope again.”

Suga hopes BTS will win a Grammy Award

So far, the members of BTS have been nominated for one Grammy Award. At the 2021 Grammy Awards, the band received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Dynamite.” Going forward, Suga hopes BTS will have another chance to win a Grammy Award.

“Of course I still wish to be nominated and give it another try. I really want to get it,” Suga said in the interview with SBS 8 News.

Compared to “Dynamite” spending three non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, BTS’ song “Butter” spent nine non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the chart, meaning BTS could have another shot at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
