Demi Lovato and Marshmello's "OK Not to Be OK" Seeks to Remove the Stigma Around Mental Health

Demi Lovato is back at it again with another uplifting track to add to her catalogue. Six months after releasing “I Love Me,” Demi’s most recent single about overcoming her self-esteem issues and being at peace with the skin that she’s in, she has now teamed up with electronic artist Marshmello for a brand new track titled “OK Not to Be OK.”

Instead of tackling issues of self-confidence this time around, Demi and Marshello are using their new track as an opportunity to publicly discuss and open up the conversation around mental health, which—if recent statistics are any indicator—is extremely important given the current state of the world.

Marshmello wanted to make a song addressing this topic because he knows it can often feel terrifying for a person to share negative emotions that they’re feeling. In an interview with Zane Lowe on Apple Music, he said:

And thus, “OK Not to Be OK” was born!

To further the message of mental health, Demi and Marshmello teamed up with Hope for the Day on Global Suicide Prevention Day.

“We are excited to be teaming up with Demi Lovato and Marshmello on this project to break the stigma around mental health on world suicide prevention day,” Hope for the Day founder and CEO Jonny Boucher wrote in a statement. “Hope for the Day’s work in suicide prevention and mental health education thrives when we collaborate with others and what better than two of the largest artists in the world to work with on a track that reminds everyone it’s OK not to be OK.”

Without further ado, listen to the track and learn the lyrics below.

[Verse 1]
Feeling like a drop in the ocean
That don’t nobody notice
Maybe it’s all just in your head
Feeling like you’re trapped in your own skin
And now your body’s frozen
Broken down, you’ve got nothing left

[Pre-Chorus]
When you’re high on emotion
And you’re losing your focus
And you feel too exhausted to pray
Don’t get lost in the moment
Or give up when you’re closest
All you need is somebody to say

[Chorus]
It’s okay not to be okay
It’s okay not to be okay
When you’re down and you feel ashamed
It’s okay not to be okay

[Verse 2]
Feeling like your life’s an illusion
And lately, you’re secluded
Thinking you’ll never get your chancе
Feeling like you got no solution
It’s only ’cause you’re human
No control, it’s out of your hands

[Pre-Chorus]
Whеn you’re high on emotion
And you’re losing your focus
And you feel too exhausted to pray
Don’t get lost in the moment
Or give up when you’re closest
All you need is somebody to say

[Chorus]
It’s okay not to be okay
It’s okay not to be okay
When you’re down and you feel ashamed
It’s okay not to be okay

[Bridge]
When you’re high on emotion
And you’re losing your focus
And you feel too exhausted to pray (Ah-ha)
Don’t get lost in the moment
Or give up when you’re closest
All you need is somebody to say

[Chorus]
It’s okay not to be okay (Oh)
It’s okay not to be okay (No, no, no)
When you’re down and you feel ashamed (When you feel ashamed)
It’s okay not to be okay (No, no, no)
It’s okay not to be okay
