‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’: Why This Song Was So Perfect for the Bus Scene

One of the most memorable moments in Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was the bus fight, where Shang-Chi (portrayed by Simu Liu) first showcased his martial arts prowess.

The song behind this moment was just as crucial in the storytelling, according to the Marvel movie’s director.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings included memorable fight scenes, including the ‘bus scene’

Shang-Chi loves late-night karaoke sessions with his best friend, Katy. Everything changes for this martial arts master, though, after learning that his father is searching for his green pendant. The first time Marvel fans saw this superhero in action was the bus scene from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

“The bus fight was part of my initial pitch, which was really just a what-if scenario,” writer and director Destin Daniel Cretton said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “As part of my pitch, I was explaining the type of fight sequences that I enjoy, ones where the stakes just keep rising as the fight continues.”

“And my what-if scenario was instead of two guys fighting in a park, what if they were on a bus that loses its brakes and is careening down the hills of San Francisco? And our hero has to fight while trying to drive,” he continued. “That initial idea I never thought would ever actually make it into the movie, but we took that idea and handed it over to Brad Allan and his incredible team.”

‘Run It’ by DJ Snake, Rich Brian, and Rick Ross plays during the ‘Shang-Chi’ bus scene

As with most fight scenes in this Marvel production, Shang-Chi’s bus fight included a song in the background created with specific “scoring techniques.” That was “Run It,” a song performed by DJ Snake, Rich Brian, and Rick Ross and curated specifically for this moment.

“We were able to go back and forth with Sean and his artists to mold that track, so when you watch that scene, you’ll see very classic scoring techniques but through an electronic song,” Cretton said during an interview with the New York Times.

‘Run It’ is one of the most popular songs from ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album’

Like Marvel’s Black Panther and its corresponding album created by Kendrick Lamar, an album curated by 88rising featured songs in the Shang-Chi, and tracks inspired by the story.

That includes “Hot Soup,” sung by Liu, in addition to songs performed by EARTHGANG, Anderson .Paak, and 21 Savage. On Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album “Run It” currently has over 17 million Spotify plays.

“Run It” and the other tracks from the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: The Album is available on most major music streaming platforms. This Marvel movie debuts on Disney+ on Nov. 12, 2021, joining already-released blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War
