Over the past few years director Zack Snyder has become synonymous with films set in the DC Comics universe. Not only did he bring the greatest Superman rendition to the big screen in Man of Steel with Henry Cavill, he also continued the story in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Although he has a lot of fans who know him as only a superhero director, he started his journey on a zombie movie.

Snyder first hit Hollywood with the 2004 remake of George A Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

In the movie, Snyder brought the horror movie into the 21st century using more realistic effects and horrifying narratives involving zombie children and an undead baby.

The director recently spoke with Express.co.uk about returning to his zombie movie roots with Netflix for Army of the Dead and adapting his now well-established cinematic style into a new genre.

Discussing whether his previous DCEU movies helped Army of the Dead, Snyder said: “I mean, look… yes, in some ways.”

Snyder went on: “I don’t know if this movie shares cinematic style or similarities that are that strong with movies like the superhero movies I’ve done in recent years, but I will say that the notion of deconstructing the genre is a thing that I was very interested in.

“And [Army of the Dead] kind of has been inspired by films that I have done over the last couple of years.”

The director has worked hard over the past few years to break the mould in the films he has worked on.

Snyder’s superhero films are a great example of this, as they focus more on visuals and pathos over sheer action.

Army of the Dead is no different. It stars Dave Bautista – of Marvel’s Avengers Endgame fame – as Scott Ward, the leader of a group of mercenaries who are looking to not only fight the undead but break into a vault in Las Vegas.

Although the director had a clear vision in mind for the Netflix movie, he did meet some challenges along the way.

He explained: “Shooting [Army of the Dead] was kind of its own… a lot of the time a movie presents its own challenges in production while you’re doing it.”

Snyder continued: “You know, like whether it’s the schedule, or makeup, or whatever you’re fighting and it sort of inspires style change.

“I was pretty straight forward with the way I wanted to shoot it.

“It was really a matter of trying to create this kind of intimate [feel].

“Even when the characters were outside I wanted there to be this intimacy with the way they were photographed.”

Although the film is set in Las Vegas it maintains a claustrophobic feeling throughout.

This energy and design was inspired by some classic genre films, Snyder added.

Specifically, he pointed at movies such as Escape from New York, Aliens and Planet of the Apes.

Army of the Dead is due for release on Netflix on May 21, 2021.
