Arthur devastated in Emmerdale as Marshall asks Cathy on date to 'fake it'

Arthur Thomas (Alfie Clarke) was left utterly heartbroken in Emmerdale after Marshall Hamston (Max Fletcher) decided to go on a date with Cathy Hope (Gabrielle Dowling) in the hopes of ‘faking it ’til he makes it’.

Marshall, who came out as gay last week, was left uncertain about what to do following a visit from his homophobe of a father Colin (Mark Noble), who claimed he couldn’t possibly know he was gay without having been on a date with a girl.

This, coupled with Heath’s comments about faking it til he makes it in regards to his own pursuit of love, left the teen confused, as did the countless messages from Colin, who was gaslighting him in the hopes of getting him to come home.

Marshall therefore asked Cathy out on a date, denying that he was gay when asked by Cathy, revealing that he’s got tickets to the gig she was desperately hoping to attend.

Arthur, meanwhile, got tickets too and asked Marshall if he would go with him, but Marshall declined, revealing that he’s taking Cathy instead.

The news left Arthur, who has feelings for Marshall, absolutely heartbroken. ‘Marshall, you think you’re gay!’, he exclaimed.

Marshall, however, was quick to emphasise the ‘think’ in such a statement, before telling Arthur that he ‘doesn’t care’ what he thinks.

Arthur, as viewers know, has made his feelings for Marshall known in the past. Marshall has also confirmed that he reciprocates these feelings, with the two boys almost sharing a kiss back in January.

After moving in with Arthur earlier this week, Marshall thanked Arthur for all of his support, before asking him if they could remain just friends – for now.

Colin’s visit, however, has left the teen more confused as ever, especially his claim that he can’t know who he is without having kissed a girl.

Will Arthur be able to convince Marshall that it’s okay for him to be himself? What’s more, will the two boys ever get the chance to be together?

Or will their Heartstopper-esque romance be stopped in its tracks before its even really begun?

Emmerdale continues Thursday March 16 at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
