Fans of The Bold Type will be relieved that the series is returning once again, but its return is bittersweet as the show will have a shortened season. Will the series be able to wrap up all storylines in the final free episodes?
Created by Sarah Watson, The Bold Type is a fun comedy-drama series inspired by the life and career of Joanna Coles, the former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine.
The series follows the lives of three women, Jane (played by Katie Stevens), Kat (Aisha Dee), and Sutton (Meghann Fahy).
All three women work at the fictional Scarlet magazine, and the series follows their careers and lives in New York City.
The fifth and final season was announced in January this year, however, showrunner Wendy Straker Hauser has expressed her concerns over the shortened final season.
Speaking to TV Line, Hauser expressed her initial fears over the shorter fifth season, adding that the show’s renewal was “bittersweet”.
Hauser added that despite there only being six episodes for the show to wrap up, she also stated that it was bittersweet as “we were so excited and grateful to be picked up, and then it felt like, ‘Oh no, we only have six episodes to tell these stories”.
Hauser continued to express how grateful she was that her show was renewed and that she had the opportunity to wrap up the show in “a beautiful way that we’re really proud of”.
Hauser later explained that the first two episodes of season five have already been filmed last year, however, the pandemic cut production short.
As the delay caused production to slow, the fifth season was only able to resume early this year, meaning that the season five premiere follows on directly from the season four finale.
She teased that the trio would be “waking up hung over and trying to piece their night together a little bit”.
When they wake, the three women will still have to deal with their romantic woes.
Kat is struggling to deal with her blossoming relationship with Eva Rhodes (Alex Paxton-Beesley), and tries to figure out what she wants to do, Hauser explained.
She also stated that Sutton will have to deal with the fallout from her night with her high school boyfriend, and this will affect Sutton’s career.
After Jane was told that she was the future of the magazine, she will struggle with the decision about whether or not “she should pursue a relationship with somebody she works with,” especially given the fact that it could mess with her future,” Hauser details.
All three chapters are “carrying this huge weight” going forward as each one wrestles with their choices.
“Sometimes, they take steps forward, and sometimes, they take huge steps back and make big mistakes or things that they regret or things that they question,” Hauser continued.
The fourth season first aired in January 2020, and the season was cut to only 16 episodes because of COVID-19.
Originally a Freeform series, The Bold Type broadcasts internationally on Amazon Prime Video.
With the season five premiere fast approaching, fans won’t have to wait long to discover the romantic fates of Jane, Kat, and Sutton.
All seasons of The Bold Type are available on Prime Video.
