When Disney+ announced its slate of brand-new Marvel properties, it put an effective end to the Netflix television side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This grittier, darker, more adult-themed take on the MCU was a hit with fans. However, while the Netflix universe, from Daredevil to The Punisher, took place inside the same one as the movie, it was always detached.
Now, fans on Reddit are wondering how to get Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, into the film universe, as well.
Who is Daredevil?
Daredevil’ has been a part of the Marvel universe for decades. A blind lawyer named Murdock, Daredevil has increased sensory perception that makes his lack of vision a gift more than a nuisance. The rare superhero with a real-life physical impairment, Daredevil has always been a hit with fans, although his first movie left a lot to be desired.
In 2003’s Daredevil, Ben Affleck took on a role that, similar to Batman’s attempt, didn’t go as expected. Hoping to capitalize on the success of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, Daredevil had an all-star cast of Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Michael Clarke Duncan, and Colin Farrell. While the film had some financial success, it wasn’t the groundbreaking movie that it set out to be.
Many years later, however, after years of trying to get another Daredevil film made, Netflix and Disney partnered on a series that was aimed toward an adult audience. With Charlie Cox in the titular role, Daredevil ran for three seasons and an event series called The Defenders.
Where does Daredevil fit inside the MCU?
Even within the realm of standard MCU television shows, the Netflix universe was self-contained.
Although it made several references to the events of The Avengers and other Marvel movies, the show existed in a bubble that was mostly confined to the Netflix stage. After it became clear that Disney was pivoting toward a more inclusive MCU that worked in conjunction with one another; however, the Netflix shows began to drop like flies.
Fans loved Daredevil and its unique take on the hand-to-hand aspect of its hero. Not only that, they loved the grittier take on the Marvel universe thanks in part to Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and the rest of the superstar cast.
Although the MCU has never shied away from bringing people back from deceased properties, many wonder if the Netflix shows will ever get this treatment. Fans on Reddit have argued this point to no end.
How can Daredevil fit?
The MCU is beginning to show that it’s not afraid to purge talent not only from its universe but from any universe that had the Marvel name at some point. Bringing back Jamie Foxx’s Electro in the upcoming Spider-Man movie to JK Simmons’ return in the second one, it’s clear that Marvel is going in a new direction.
Add the multiverse to the mix, and they have a lot to work off of. For Daredevil to enter the more fantastic MCU canon, the creators would need to make it fit naturally.
While Daredevil is a more grounded superhero than the ones we often see in the MCU, he theoretically could exist inside the universe, similar to Hawkeye, Black Widow, Iron Man, and other superheroes who lead mortal existences.
There’s no doubt that the MCU could add Daredevil back into the mix. However, the only question is how. Whether they bring him in via the ever-popular multiverse or let Cox’s character finally meet his big-screen counterparts, there’s always a way to bring someone in.
On Reddit, fans theorized about ways that the MCU could add Daredevil to the mix. While some want to see it in the form of a set-piece, user u/WolverineKuzuri wants to see something more grounded.
“As cool as an action introduction would be, I feel like Peter Parker being in a Police interrogation room and then Matt Murdock walking in and saying ‘Mr. Parker, not another word’ would be even better.”
Daredevil’s rights are due to move to Marvel later this year. It’s safe to say that he will end up back inside in some way or another. However, while the franchise has avoided total retcons of past work, there’s no guarantee that Cox will take over the reins. Only time will tell. Until then, fans are left speculating about how it could happen.
