EastEnders Jack Branning star gushes over co-star as he talks dark storyline

EastEnders star Scott Maslen has praised his young on-screen daughter Ellie Dadd.

The BBC One soap aired a breakthrough in Amy Mitchell's self-half storyline in recent scenes.

The teen was caught harming herself by Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) leading to a fraught aftermath as her father Jack Branning struggled with how to help his daughter.

While Jack confiscated Amy's self-harm kit, she later stole a pair of scissors from Denise Fox's (Diane Parish) salon without anyone knowing.

Jack took his daughter Amy to see a therapist, but it didn't turn out well because Amy had trouble opening up with her dad.

His girlfriend Denise discovered the scissors had been stolen, so she had a quiet word with Amy where the youngster could finally open up about how she's struggling.

In a heartbreaking scene, Amy lifted her sleeve to show Denise how she'd been harming herself. The two broke down in tears, yet Denise turned it into a positive moment.

Opening up about the hard-hitting storyline, Scott told Daily Star at the TV Choice Awards: "The show is in a really good place.

"As far as topic storlines, and message to put out there, it's a sort dark story but these stories in this present time need to be spoken about, especially amongst the young.

"It's relevant and dealt with really well. I don't want to say too much."

"They got some brilliant young actors. Ellie is phenomenal. I don't tell her this to her face but I can't speak highly enough of her. She's got a really good head."

"We've got a great family with the Fox-Brannings and I'm deeply happy and excited about the future.

"There's so much good stuff coming up from so many different people."

Actress Ellie joined the cast as Amy earlier this year taking over the role from Abbie Burke.

Before landing the role, Ellie starred in the popular BBC crime drama series Silent Witness playing Cat Shaw in season 23.

Away from all of the drama of Albert Square, Ellie is close to her soap co-stars and is often photographed hanging out with the cast backstage.

She reportedly has a close friendship with Bobby Brazier, who plays the role of Freddie Slater in the soap, as well as lots of the other young cast members.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC1 at 7.30pm
