Stacey (played by Lacey Turner) has been in prison since the beginning of the year and she made a fleeting return a few weeks ago on EastEnders to hear her mother Jean Slater (Gillian Wright) was free from cancer. The beloved character is making her grand return to Walford in this week’s episodes of the BBC soap as she tries to get her life back on track. It is hoped this will be a lengthier stay for the feisty mother of three after being absent from a good portion of the drama for the past two years, but why has actress Lacey been taking so much time off?

Why did Lacey Turner leave EastEnders as Stacey Slater?

It’s fair to say Stacey’s complicated relationship with husband Martin Fowler (James Bye) gave her the chance to make a couple of exits from the show.

Not only did he lie to her about sleeping with his ex-wife Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), but he also got married to her supposed friend Ruby Allen (Louise Lytton).

Lacey’s character wasn’t best pleased and this led to her reintroduction in 2020, but as the drama become more intense with the love triangle, Stacey ended up in prison after her ex-husband’s wife framed her for a crime.

With the evidence weighing against her, the beloved character has been spending time in prison for the last few months.

This storyline was curated to give actress Lacey a chance to step away from the drama as she was pregnant with her second child at the time.

Having left in 2019 to give birth to her first child, Lacey returned to filming in 2020 with baby number two on the way.

This meant writers had to think carefully about how Stacey could be at the centre of the drama for a limited time but also have a way to come back in the future.

Lacey and her husband Matthew Kay welcomed their second child and their first son to the world in February, several weeks before the actresses alter-ego made her temporary departure.

The 32-year-old was surprised by the early arrival as he was born just two days after she had finished filming her last scenes on the soap.

After much consideration, the couple decided to name their second-born Trilby Fox Kay and they are overjoyed to have two children after having two miscarriages in the past.

We feel really grateful

Discussing how it felt to fall pregnant so quickly after having daughter Dusty, Lacey said it was “amazing”.

“We’re so lucky to have gone on our journey and to come out the other end with two healthy babies, and especially to have one of each.

“We feel really grateful. [Trilby] was so tiny and because he was early it makes him that bit more special,” she told OK! Magazine.

“There are people who go through a similar sort of thing and unfortunately don’t come out with that happy ending, so we know we’re blessed.

Lacey managed to return to filming just a few short weeks after giving birth to finish up her storyline but she agreed to have a full six months of maternity leave.

It was hoped she would go back in August and although she has made a few guest appearances in recent weeks, the filming of other storylines meant her release from prison comes this month.

In another interview with OK! Magazine in the summer, the actress teased what her character was going to be up to when she did make her comeback.

Lacey said: “I’m really lucky because although with a big storyline you can be working like any full-time job, there are a lot of times when I’m not needed so it works out perfectly.

“I also live not too far away from the studios so that always makes things easier and I can pop home between filming.

“I’m always home for bath and bedtime, too. It’s a privileged position to be in. I’m very lucky,” the soap star admitted.

How does Stacey Slater return to EastEnders?

In Monday night’s episode and having completed her sentence for assaulting Ruby, Stacey makes her comeback and is greeted with a party.

Unfortunately for Martin, his ex-wife has some news for him but this doesn’t stop him from confessing his feelings for her.

Not long after, the Slaters are moving into the Panesar household when Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) fails to fix their boiler.

This leads to a new storyline for Stacey as she begins to develop feelings for Kheerat Panesar (Jaz Deol) after the pair slept together last year.

She also bumps into Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) and with plenty of history between the two women, it’s not the easiest of reunions.

With so much drama on the horizon, it is fair to say Stacey won’t be making another exit anytime soon.

EastEnders continues tonight at 8:05pm on BBC One.
