Gavin and Stacey stars are unrecognisable in teenage throwback – but can you guess who they are?

GAVIN and Stacey stars Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones are unrecognisable in a throwback photo, with 56-year-old Rob revealing that they have been good friends since they were teenagers.

The actor starred as Uncle Bryn in the hit BBC sitcom, which was written by 54-year-old Ruth, and James Corden – with Ruth also playing the role of Nessa.

Appearing on Lorraine today, Rob revealed that Ruth sometimes surprises fans by joining him onstage at the end of his current musical tour for a performance of Islands In The Stream.

The pair famously performed the hit during a karaoke night as their characters in Gavin and Stacey.

And Rob went on to explain that he and the star go back decades, and first worked together when they were teenagers.

He told host Lorraine Kelly: "I first got into musical theatre at school in the late '70s and early '80s, which is where I met Ruth Jones!

"So I've known her since I was a teenager and we were in the school musicals together."

A black and white photo of the pair performing in a version of Carousel was then shown on screen, with Rob adding some extra details.

He shared: "That's Carousel, and I'm wearing my uncle's stack-heeled boots to give me some kind of height advantage.

"That's Ruth there on the left, we also did Guys & Dolls."

Earlier in the chat, Rob insisted that he had "no idea" about whether or not there would be another Gavin and Stacey reunion – adding that he feared "looking like a killjoy".

Last week, James Corden got fans' hopes up when he dropped the biggest hint yet that the hit show will return for at least one more episode.

He said: "I think it would be a shame to leave it there. That’s my feeling and I think Ruth feels the same.

"It doesn’t feel like the end of a book, it feels like the end of a chapter."

James added: "But I do feel like if we ever did another one that would be the end of it."

The show originally aired between 2007 and 2010 but returned in 2019 for a Christmas special, which pulled in almost 12 million viewers.

It left fans on tenterhooks after ending on a huge cliffhanger that saw Nessa propose to Corden's Smithy on Christmas Day.
