'Gilmore Girls': Rory's Double Standard With Paris Proves She's a Hypocrite

Gilmore Girls is a comedy-drama series that made stars out of actors Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. It formed a fan base that remains strong to this day — even though the show went off the air in 2007.

With a cast of strong supporting players and a stunning small-town setting, Gilmore Girls quickly made an impression with viewers and fans and ended up running for seven years. These days, with rumors of a second revival swirling, many fans are looking to some of the more problematic moments between the characters in Gilmore Girls as proof that, while the series was groundbreaking, it still had some issues.

‘Gilmore Girls’ is a staple of early 2000s television

Gilmore Girls premiered on The WB in 2000, starring Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, a 30-something single mother, and Bledel as Rory, Lorelai’s teenage daughter.

Lorelai, who escaped a past that included stifling, wealthy parents, live and work in the town of Stars Hollow, a charming hamlet that houses a variety of eccentric friends and neighbors. Although Lorelai and Rory have their differences, the two have a bond that remains unbreakable, in spite of all the odds.

Gilmore Girls was praised for the strong characterizations and smart writing, and fans loved the way the show focused primarily on two dynamic, interesting female characters. The show exhibited a cross-generational appeal that was unlike anything else on television, and eventually, it became one of TV’s most popular shows.

Gilmore Girls ended its original run on television in 2007, but many of the stars returned for a four-part miniseries revival in late 2016, titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

What is the relationship between Rory and Paris?

While the central relationship in Gilmore Girls was the complicated familial one between Lorelai and Rory, there were many other characters who made an impression on audiences.

One character who had a very dynamic arc throughout the course of the series run was Paris Gellar. Initially, Paris and Rory have an antagonistic relationship, with the two barely able to see eye to eye on anything.

As time went on, Rory began to learn more about Paris, including that the young girl had an incredibly sad upbringing. Paris had a problematic relationship with her parents and completely abandoned her when she was in college, leaving her in a poor financial situation.

Eventually, Rory and Paris were able to form a friendship — although it was tested more than once over the years, mainly when it came to romantic situations.

What was Rory’s double standard with Paris that fans can’t get over?

Rory Gilmore might have been a very lovable character most of the time, but she certainly had her foibles. Notably, there was at least one time when Rory and Paris had an interaction that proved Rory could be a major hypocrite.

According to ScreenRant, Rory had no problem taking Paris to task when she found out that Paris was dating their Yale professor, Asher Fleming. Rory pointed out the age difference between Paris and Asher, but somehow, her criticisms had no effect on her when she later decided to sleep with a married man.

Ultimately, fans were able to overlook many of Rory’s personal struggles, even though she has certainly exhibited some problematic behavior over the years.
