The duo was inseparable until Bancroft's tragic death in June 2005.

The two-time Golden Globe-winning actress was 73 at the time of her death. She passed away due to uterine cancer.

In a 2010 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Brooks credited Bancroft as the guiding force behind his involvement in developing The Producers and Young Frankenstein for the musical theater.
