From award-winning duo Neil McKay and Jeff Pope, Four Lives will dramatise another true crime case. The miniseries will look at the deaths of four young men and their families’ fight to discover the truth about what happened to them. Express.co.uk has the lowdown on the new series.
How many episodes are in Four Lives?
Four Lives is a three-part drama series premiering on BBC One on Monday, January 3 at 9pm.
The BBC has stripped the show, meaning it will air on consecutive evenings across the week in the same 9pm time slot.
For those eager to watch the entire series in one go rather than waiting each night, the BBC will be making all episodes available on BBC iPlayer from 9pm on January 3.
Four Lives was announced back in 2019 under the working title The Barking Murders but this was later changed to place the focus back on the victims.
The drama recounts the four murders committed by killer Stephen Port.
Port lured victims to his home using dating apps for gay and bisexual men before drugging them with GHB and sexually assaulting them.
He would then dump their bodies near his home in Barking, east London.
The serial killer is serving a whole life sentence and it’s unlikely he will be released on parole after being jailed in 2016.
Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth and Jack Taylor were Port’s victims whom he murdered between 2014 and 2015.
An inquest in December last year found police failings contributed to the deaths of three of the victims.
According to the programme-makers, the BBC waited for the inquiry in the handling of the Port case to wrap up leading to the show’s two-year delay.
Four Lives has been made by Pope and McKay, who also produced the factual dramas The Moorside and Appropriate Adult.

The miniseries stars funnyman Stephen Merchant who will be shedding his comedic persona to give a chilling turn as convicted murderer Port.
Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith will be taking on the role as a bereaved mother of one of the victims.
This show marks Smith’s latest collaboration with Pope having worked with the Oscar-nominated writer on Cilla, The Moorside, Mrs Biggs, and Isolation Stories.
Other cast members include Jaime Winstone, Rufus Jones, Robert Emma, Daniel Ryan, Leanne Best and Stephanie Hyam.
Reflecting on the case, Pope told media including American entertainment outlet Deadline: “We felt there was a monumental failing on the part of the authorities, the police and the justice system and the way to tell this story was to come at it from the family’s point of view, faithfully recounting what happened to them at each step.”
Pope went on to say: “It needs to be clubbed around the head to stop this happening again.”
He added: “Having waited all this time, the only light is that we now transmit our show when the story is front and centre.”
