Inside Robert Irwins life – bond with dad, Glee romance, Stranger Things link

Crikey! Love him or hate him, an entire generation was introduced to some of the coolest creatures from Down Under and around the world by the ever-enthusiastic Steve Irwin.

Adoring fans welcomed the conservationist as a household name through the '90s and early 2000s and fans marveled as he championed animals that most considered deadly and dangerous through his popular daytime show The Crocodile Hunter.

The beloved Aussie, who tragically died in 2006 after he was barbed by stingray, was the father of two children, Robert, now 17, and Bindi, now 23.

Loyal fans of the late croc hunter have watched them grow up and continue their dad’s legacy for conservationism, and none more so than his son Robert.

From hilarious TV appearances to shows on Animal Planet, let’s take a look inside the life of Steve’s son Robert and the legacy he hopes to continue in the name of his late dad.

Close bond with late dad

Born and raised in a world full of dangerous, beautiful, and interesting animals has led animal-lover Robert to follow in his dad’s footsteps.

Robert was often seen appearing on his dad’s hit show The Crocodile Hunter as a young child, and it was clear for all to see what a special relationship the pair had during the two short years the pair spent together.

One such appearance together caused enormous controversy across Australia when Steve took then one-month old Robert under his arm during a live show as he hand fed a chicken carcass to a 12ft crocodile.

The incident prompted the Queensland Government to change its crocodile-handling laws, banning children and untrained adults from entering crocodile enclosures.

Steve was quoted before his death saying of his family: “we are the strongest family unit on the face of the earth. We try to do every single thing together. The family that does crocodiles together sticks together."

Sister Bindi spoke about her brother’s grief at the time saying: “Sometimes he says ‘I’m very sad’ and I tell his it’s ok. He’s still with us”

Kevin Hart

If you haven’t watched the video, it’s a must-see! Back in 2018, then 14-year-old Robert Irwin brought a host of exotic animals onto the set of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

With Kevin Hart appearing as a fellow guest, fans marvelled in the hilarious reaction from the American comic as he showcased his sheer terror at the sight of Robert’s furry friends.

Robert, who hosts a show on Animal Planet called Crikey! It’s the Irwins, began the segment with a 2-month-old ostrich named Giselle. “I’m starting off with something very cute and cuddly,” he said.

Hart did not agree. Jumping up, he exclaimed, “You can kiss my a**.”

Robert’s fun fact that ostrich legs can “easily kill a lion” did not amuse Hart either — he stared at the camera with a petrified look as the audience roared. “You can put that one back,” he said.

Next up were snakes named LeBron and Elvis. As Hart tried to run away, Fallon chimed in saying: “No, stay Kevin, no. We’re in this together man.

“Kevin, you have to just get over your fears, and you have to hold the snake.”

“It ain’t gonna happen,” Hart answered.

Robert’s third visitor was a red knee tarantula, which turned out to be too much for Hart to handle. “My a** is sweating, Jimmy,” he said. “I’m being 100 percent honest. I got so much sweat dripping down my a** right now.”

Romance rumours

Back in 2019, Robert was rumoured to be dating Glee actress Emmy Perry after they walked the red carpet together at the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner in Los Angeles.

Emma and Robert had plenty in common, as she launched her own animal charity, Emmy's Hope when she was just 11.

However, Robert's mum Terri hinted that Emmy could have competition from Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown as she said: "Robert is 15 now, he's growing up. Definitely the girls are noticing him!"

Millie was pictured with Robert and sister Bindi at Australia Zoo that year as she called it "the most magical with these special souls".

It is not known whether Robert and Emmy are still dating now.

Career and legacy

The young star was always destined for fame in the wildlife industry and Robert has seized the bull by the horns.

Robert now works with Wildlife Warriors, a conservation organization started by the Irwin family and his sister Bindi became the CEO of Australia Zoo at the age of just 22.

He has won numerous awards for his nature and wildlife photography and appeared on just about every talk show including Entertainment Tonight and Good Morning America. He's also competed alongside his sister in Celebrity Family Feud.

In 2010, Robert appeared in the film Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove as a pirate boy, giving Irwin his first acting credit and he's also credited twice as a producer – once on Irwin Family Adventures and again on Crikey It's the Irwins: Robert to the Rescue.

Both credits came in 2021, making the teenager a producer at age 17. In addition to his TV work he has also met with world leaders such as Prince Charles to discuss the protection of natural habitat.
