You could almost say the Bond hopeful is set to score an absolute, ahem, blinder. Even though the release date for Craig’s final outing has been put back yet again, many eyes are already turned towards the future. The current 007 star has been waving the longest farewell to the role imaginable, even before the plans to release Bond 25 this April were scuppered by the global pandemic. Meanwhile, sudden reports claimed that Tom Hardy already had the role in the bag but absolutely nothing has been confirmed by anyone involved and the actor’s hold is already slipping.
Cillian Murphy is probably best for playing a rather more villainous array of characters on the big and small screens.
From his psychotic relentless assassin in Red Eye to Batman’s adversary The Scarcrow across The Dark Knight Trilogy, the actor always brings a palpable sense of menace.
This may not immediately suggest him as a tight fit for Britain’s greatest silver screen hero, but 007 had grown progressively darker and grittier as the franchise progresses.
A sudden major surge in bets on the star just staked his claim to the coveted role.
Uk bookies Boyle Sports just slashed the odds on the Peaky BLinders stars.
A spokesman told Express Online: “A renewed burst of money for Cillian Murphy to don the famous tuxedo and play James Bond has arrived this week.
“We’ve had to slash him in to 5/1 from 10/1. This is the shortest price the Peaky Blinders star has ever been with us.”
Fans and pundits are used to seeing rapid surges in betting when a star has a high profile film or TV show.
Unusually, the Cork-born actor has something very different from the usual Bond-bait action and drama shows which propel their leading men into contention.
Murphy is currently all over the airwaves with a new 12-part show on 6 Music. The star says he will be sharing his own “nocturnal playlist made for [playing] after midnight” on the BBC Radio 6 late-night show Cillian Murphy’s Limited Edition.
As for Peaky Blinders, the period gangster show wrapped up Season 5 in September last year, with producers confirming there will be either one or two more seasons to finish the story.
The show and Murphy’s own profile will be have been further raised by Netflix USA’s acquisition.
Competition, remains fierce at the top, however, in the race to replace Craig as Bond, with more than just Hardy standing in Murphy’s way.

Tom Hardy remains the clear favourite after reports over the summer claimed the British actor had secretly already been cast in the role but producers were holding back the news until the release of No Time To Die.
Michael Fassbender also made major gains this week, jumping from 14/1 to 10/1.
The rest of the leader board is filled out by BOdygurad star Richard madden at 3/1, while Murphy is tied with Tom Hiddleston, McMafia’s James Norton and Highlander’s Sam Heughan on 5/1.
