When NCIS first aired on CBS in 2003, it was an instant hit with fans intrigued to see how the team resolve important cases. As well as the loyal streamers, the procedural drama often gains new viewers who binge-watch the 18 season drama – and one of them has exposed a glaring continuity error from season two.
As fans eagerly away season 19 of the CBS crime drama, many of its viewers have also taken to re-watching the series, to refresh their memories.
In the season two episode titled Conspiracy Theory, there was an error that could’ve escalated into witness tampering.
The episode followed the story of Jessica Smith (played Hilary Salvator) a young Petty officer, who files a police report after being attacked.
However, she was brushed away by her therapist who believed she was suffering from paranoia – spurred on by her fiance’s death in Iraq.
Despite being adamant about her attacker, Jessica was found dead by apparent suicide, however, it was later revealed she had been murdered.
In order to solve this case a team of agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service [NCIS], led by Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs were called in.
A few moments into the search and investigation, a fan spotted the unmissable continuity error.
They took to MovieMistakes.com to expose the blunder and wrote: “Gibbs puts his gun in his drawer on a blue folder then goes to talk to Fornell in the lift.
“When he comes back, he picks his gun up and the contents of the drawer and position of the gun have completely changed,” the viewer added.
As well as being a huge plot hole, this was also a key moment that Gibbs surprisingly didn’t notice.
Gibbs was highly admired by his colleagues and team for his intuitiveness, which pushed him into the position of team leader.
As the gun was very clearly in a different position to the one he left it in before leaving to talk in the elevator.

This also could’ve easily been a case of someone deliberately moving the weapon or even replacing it.
The fact that a skilled investigator like Gibbs didn’t notice could have his character called into question.
When he first put the gun down, he placed it on top of a bright blue folder, which was surrounded by a notepad and colourful sticky notes.
However, when he opened the draw the colourful contents had been replaced with a stack of brown folders.
Perhaps 18 seasons of Gibbs leading his team of agents could have finally been catching up with him.
Gibbs’ security had previously been brought to his attention, as the Special Agent didn’t have computer password protection.
When other characters had mentioned it to him, he simply flashed his gun indicating that nobody could mess with his property while he was armed.
NCIS season 19 premieres on CBS on Monday, September 20 in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
