After a lengthy delay in production due to Covid, fans can finally look forward to season six of Outlander premiering on Starz very soon. Ahead of its release actor Sam Heughan who played Jamie Fraser shared new details about the series.
Sam joined Alex Zane for an episode of his podcast titled Just The Facts where he opened up about starring and producing season six.
He also shared some of the struggles: “It’s been challenging, shooting through a Scottish winter during the pandemic was weird, we’d go to work and we didn’t know what was going to happen.”
The actor explained: “I’d just finished shooting a movie in London which had similar Covid protocols but to be in Scotland and see no-one on the roads driving to work and to be in this world where it felt like we were the only people at work, it was kinda crazy.”
After Alex asked if he was “happy with season six,” he responded: “I’m really pleased with this season and it feels like early western vibe to it.”
Sam went into detail and revealed: “We’re building up to the War of Independence, obviously there’s time-travel as well and other elements, it feels like a small but mighty season.
In fact, season six will be the smallest instalment the show has produced as well as the hardest series to film.
Unlike the others, the upcoming series will only have eight episodes, whereas season five hailed with 12.
However, to make up for the shortfall Outlander’s premiere will be a whopping 90 minutes.
In a statement, showrunner Matthew B Roberts said: “Filming in 2021 has presented an unprecedented set of challenges which led us to the decision to truncate the season in order to bring the fans the most vibrant and dynamic season as soon as possible.
“Dinna fash, we will then film an extended season seven with 16 episodes next year as life returns to normalcy,” he added.
Thankfully, production is complete and although an official release date has yet to be revealed, fans can expect season six to hit the screen in early 2022.
The show’s executive producer also dropped a major hint during an interview with Entertainment Weekly about Jamie and Claire Fraser’s (Caitriona Balfe) relationship.
Maril Davis shared: “Jamie and Claire keep thinking they’re safe at Fraser’s Ridge, but in season 6 we’re asking, ‘What do you do when your home turns against you?’ We’ll see how that happens in their own backyard.”
This potential conflict comes with the arrival of the Christie family, led by patriarch Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones), who Jamie knew from his past.
However, the two were far from friends as they first met each other in Scotland at Ardsmuir Prison.
As they move onto Fraser Ridge tensions could rise, as Maril hinted the other residents on the ridge could also turn their back on Jamie.
Outlander released an exclusive look at the premiere’s script, where Jamie and Claire are discussing the new arrivals.
After Claire asked her husband if the Ridge was the best place to settle, he had an uneasy feeling in the pit of his stomach.
Fans believe there could also be marital woes between the seemingly happy couple as Jamie didn’t reveal his true feelings and details of the feud could come as a surprise to Claire.
Which could ultimately be the start of potential trust issues, however, fans will have to tune in to see how the Frasers will get on with the Christie family.
Outlander season 6 is expected to premiere on Starz in early 2022.
