There have been rumours for a while that the character of Al Capone could make an appearance in Peaky Blinders. Ever since Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy) mentioned him in a conversation with Luca Changretta (Adrien Brody), fans have been eager to see the Chicago gangster in action. Now season six sees Michael head to America, could this be on the cards?
Will Al Capone be in Peaky Blinders season 6?
Ever since Tommy name-dropped Al Capone in his tense stand-off with Changretta in season four, fans have been eager to see the notorious gangster make an appearance.
Viewers will remember that Tommy revealed he had collaborated with Capone in order to take out the Mafia leader.
However, in spite of what fans thought, he never appeared in the fifth series of the show.
But now there seems like there could be some more links with Chicago drawn after the introduction of Gina Gray (Anya Taylor-Joy) as Michael Gray’s (Finn Cole) new wife in season five.
This is because her introduction means an expansion of the business into America, which could be examined next season.
Rumours intensified earlier this year when creator Steven Knight revealed to the Obsessed With… Peaky Blinders podcast that he had Stephen Graham lined up for a role.
Graham has been a fan-favourite to play Capone after he was heralded for his portrayal on him on Boardwalk Empire.
However, the writer put an end to those casting rumours, adding: “We’re proceeding with that, but not for this series.
“Not Al Capone – I didn’t want to go west. Because it’s a minefield once you go into Chicago gangsters.”
However, there were even more hints that Capone could make an appearance during a recent AMA on Reddit.
Fans were eager for news once again from writer Knight and actor Cillian Murphy about whether they could expect to see the character in season six.
One fan posted: “Will we see other well-known historian figures like Churchill, Mosley, etc. on the show?
“I remember Al Capone being name-dropped by Tommy on the series four finale and I was wondering if we get to see him on screen or if any other famous figures will get referenced on the series later on?”
However, Knight did not give much away in his response on the platform, hinting that the series could go in many different directions.
He replied: “I’m not [planning] on heading West necessarily, but if we come across famous figures who are involved in the businesses Tommy is involved in, we will certainly use them.
“In series six, there will be a figure from history who may surprise people.”
This led to some other suggestions about the potential historical figures who could turn up in the show.
One name some fans were curious about was Adolf Hitler as the series heads towards World War II.
However, the creator ruled this out in an interview with Express.co.uk and other media before the launch of season five.
He said: “No, I wouldn’t want to portray Hitler. It’s too horrible.”
Whether it will be Capone who turns up or another historical figure will all be revealed when the series returns once again.
Peaky Blinders season 5 is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
