Queen of the South was renewed for season five at the beginning of the year, with filming starting in March. Unfortunately, as the world went into lockdown just a couple of weeks into shooting, this meant filming had to quickly come to a halt. Thankfully, the cast and crew have since returned to set to continue making the new lot of episodes.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Queen of the South.

Queen of the South returned for season four on USA Network last year and then was dropped on Netflix this summer.

Fans are now looking forward to the new series which is due to come out in 2021.

No details have been given regarding a release date but as long as the show sticks to its new filming schedule, season five may be out by the middle of next year.

But at one point, it was believed Queen of the South wasn’t going to be a series at all.

Was Queen of the South originally going to be a film?

Queen of the South is based on the best selling novel La Reina del Sur, written by Spanish author Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

The series was turned into a telenovela in 2011, with actress Kate del Castillo starring as Teresa Mendoza.

Five years later and USA Network aired the first season of Queen of the South which is the American adaptation of the book as well as the telenovela.

Actress Alice Braga, who portrays Teresa in the USA Network version, previously revealed how the series was originally going to be made into a movie.

When Braga had just completed filming the pilot for Queen of the South, publication Bloody Disgusting asked for a few more details on drama.

Braga replied: “It’s based on a book by this Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte.

“He’s a really good writer, and it’s a very famous book, it’s been out for a long time.

“They [the creators] tried to make a film I think five or six years ago, and it just approved for the series, and that’s it.”

Queen of the South: How is Queen of the South different from book? [EXPLAINER]

So somewhere along the pipeline, there were plans for Queen of the South to be turned into a blockbuster.

The reason why the movie didn’t go ahead remains to be seen but if the drama was a film, it would have looked very different from how it plays out on USA Network.

There is also a chance actress Braga or some of the other cast members may not have been picked for their TV roles.

Therefore, maybe it was a good thing after all that there wasn’t a Queen of the South movie.

When the drama was last seen, James Valdez (played by Peter Gadiot) had mysteriously returned.

He had been missing from series four, right up until the last few minutes of the season finale.

Wearing a bloodied shirt, James tumbled out of a car at the warehouse to give Teresa Mendoza (Alice Braga) a warning.

But how will James’ message impact the upcoming season of Queen of the South?

Queen of the South is available to watch on Netflix.
