Paddy McGuinness and team captains Sam and Ugo Monye were back on Friday’s Question of Sport for a festive episode full of sporting brainteasers. However, while Sam made her name in hockey and Ugo enjoyed a successful rugby career, the latest instalment produced a first for the BBC show as the other contestants weren’t from the world of sport.

Instead, Paddy introduced four recognisable faces from the world of showbiz and TV.

The Chase quizmaster and Chelsea fan Shaun Wallace swapped the ITV quiz show for a spot on the Question of Sport panel.

He was joined by BT Sport presenter Jules Breach and chef and rapper Big Zuu in the line-up as well.

And Strictly Come Dancing fans got to see Anton du Beke away from the dance floor as he took part in the evening of sports-related quizzing.

However, despite the new guests all being sports fans, a number of viewers were quick to express their dismay at the change to the show’s format.

Marcus Peters took Twitter to vent his thoughts as he said: “Sorry, now that the sportsmen and sportswomen aren’t on the show I don’t watch any more. Loved the old format, this just doesn’t work for me.”

Tim Barnes also raged: “Are you serious… my god this show used to be THE show for me ever since I was a kid…

“Easy fix… only get on sports people!!! Including a host that knows something about sport.”

John Gorman also tweeted: “Never seen a legendary programme go so s**t so quick. What do tv personalities gotta do with sport. RIP Question of Sport.”

While Clare McGuire Thompson weighed in: “Why are there no real sports guests on #questionofsport Sue, Tuffers and Matt would never have stood for this. Although I do like Shaun and Anton. But why?!”

However, there was some support for the Christmas special, with Matt Tatler adding to the debate: “Nothing beats a Friday night by watching @QuestionofSport that has been so great to watch and the banter with @PaddyMcGuinness and the guests having fun.

“Love it and Paddy is amazing as host as well as having good taste in cars on Top Gear too.”
