Jimmy Carr returned to Channel 4 to present a star-studded Christmas special of 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown. The festive episode, which aired on Christmas Eve, included Jon Richardson and Sarah Millican, Lee Mack and Jason Manford. However, Countdown regular Rachel Riley found herself having to awkwardly laugh off Jimmy’s savage dig about Carol Vorderman.

The Christmas special also included Nick Mohammed, Joe Wilkinson and Countdown regular Susie Dent.

During the episode, Rachel was in charge of the numbers for each round of the Channel 4 special, while Susie was checking the words.

Jon Richardson and Sarah Millican had to take on comedians Lee Mack and Jason Manford in order to win the instalment.

However, before the episode had even properly taken off, Jimmy couldn’t resist making a jibe about former Countdown presenter Carol Vorderman.

Jimmy, 49, welcomed Rachel, 35, onto the show, saying: “It’s Rachel Riley who is in charge of the numbers.

“Rachel loves carols, especially when they start asking for too much money and create a life-changing job vacancy.”

The controversial comic was referring to when Rachel’s predecessor Carol Vorderman was reportedly forced out of the job by being pressured to take a 90 per cent pay cut.

Carol was the star of Countdown for a whopping 26 years and left the hit show in 2008.

Rachel made her Countdown debut on January 12, 2009, and soon would emerge as a “jewel in the broadcasting crown” of Channel 4.

After Rachel tried to laugh off Jimmy’s cutting quip about Carol, the host swiftly changed the topic to Rachel’s new book

He said: “Rachel, apparently you’ve written a book – can you tell us about it?”

Rachel, who still appeared slightly embarrassed by Jimmy’s swipe, replied: “It’s a maths book for adults, and it’s called At Sixes and Sevens.”

Jimmy cheekily interjected: “And Susie is okay with you getting in on her boring book territory?”

Rachel admitted: “I nicked some of Susie’s stuff, I’ve got some linguistic stuff in there about codpieces.”

“I guess with a maths book for adults, you are always going to run out of ideas,” Jimmy quipped.

He then proceeded to joke about her writing about codpieces within the mathematics book.

Rachel, who was defending her book, explained that brackets were apparently named after codpieces.

Lexicographer Susie then backed Rachel, stating: “So a bracket looked like the two legs coming down from a codpiece apparently.”

The 57-year-old is known as the queen of Countdown’s dictionary corner has appeared on the show since 1992.

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown is now available to watch on All4.
