Fans were surprised to learn Rick and Morty is already coming back for its fifth season later this month, after a string of two-year hiatuses between new episodes. In the run-up to this Sunday’s season premiere on Adult Swim, Spencer Grammer has teased what viewers should expect from snarky sister Summer Smith in the coming weeks.

Voice actor Spencer Grammer has hinted her Rick and Morty character Summer Smith will be taking even more of a front seat to the action in season five.

Following a riveting second half of the adult cartoon comedy’s fourth instalment last May, the sci-fi parody is coming back after a much shorter wait than usual.

Ahead of the show’s return, some irreverent new trailers have previewed a much stronger family unit for Rick, Morty (both played by Justin Roiland) and the rest of the Smiths after the cataclysmic events of the last finale.

Grammer hinted this new tone will also translate over to Summer’s role in the family when she and the cast spoke with AV Club about the new season.

She explained: “In general being a teenage girl nowadays can be a lot of trying to figure out what your place is in the world, and how to give yourself your own agency.

“I think Summer’s starting to really find her way in that, within the family dynamic.”

Although Morty’s sister often accompanies him and his eccentric grandfather, Rick Sanchez, on various intergalactic adventures, she has often remained at home for her own side adventures in previous seasons.

However, following the arrival of her spacefaring clone, Beth (Sarah Chalke) and hapless husband Jerry (Chris Parnell) are trying harder than ever to keep their marriage and relationship with their children from self-destructing.

Meanwhile, Summer will finally be able to take a break from being the glue that often has to keep the Smith family together.

AV Club host Cameron Scheetz also noted that Summer gets to take the spotlight in her own solo adventure at the start of the season.

Indeed, the new trailers have already showcased a more action-heavy role for the sardonic teen in the weeks ahead.

At several points in the trailer, Summer even gets the chance to pilot Rick’s Space Cruiser for the first time since being scarred by its high-tech security system back in season two.

Another episode will also see the family work together as a fully-functioning unit in their own Voltron-inspired giant mech suit.

Revealing more about the new season, Grammer also noted how much she’s loved seeing the series and its core characters grow over the years.

She told AV Club: “We have these really lovely, three-dimensional female characters that we haven’t necessarily seen before.

“I mean, there’s been a push for that, but they started off a little bit two-dimensional, in some way.”

“Beth’s character was focused on how to please her father so much, or that the dysfunction of that relationship, and that grew so much more throughout [to the point] that Beth now has two Beths!”

Whether or not Space Beth will return in season five has yet to be confirmed, although cast member Sarah Chalke has assured fans there’s plenty more to explore with the new character.

It also appears this next batch of episodes won’t be split into two, so viewers can expect to see the Smith family evolve even more over the next two and a half months.

Rick and Morty season 5 premiers Sunday, June 20 on Adult Swim.
